The Seattle Mariners have been at spring training in Peoria, Ariz. for a week, but Thursday, Feb. 19, was the first day of live coverage from the Mariners on Roundtable Sports crew, headed by Brady Farkas.
As a reminder: Brady will be here for five days of live coverage and Teren Kowatsch will have additional live coverage in early March.
We will release the Buster Olney interview for this week's 'Refuse to Lose' podcast on Thursday afternoon and will have a full episode on Friday afternoon following the first spring training game against the San Diego Padres.
But before then, here are some basic takeaways from the Peoria Sports Complex, in no particular order.
1) Cal Raleigh is immensely popular. After hitting 60 home runs last season, Raleigh is now one of the most well-recognized players in the sport. That extends down here as well, where Raleigh can't do anything without being hounded for autographs, a ball or simple acknowledgement.
2) Colt Emerson is popular also. Fans are very excited about the M's top prospect and can't wait to get a glimpse of him.
3) Lazaro Montes, another top prospect, has effortless power. We've known this, but it's still impressive to see in person.
4) Brendan Donovan played third base in infield drills, with Emerson and J.P. Crawford at shortstop and Michael Arroyo at second. We continue to be interested at the plan with Arroyo, and this is no different. Cole Young and Miles Mastrobuoni were on an alternate field with some others.
5) Bryce Miller looked solid in a bullpen session. He also threw a live, but we only caught him in the 'pen.
6) There are a lot of former M's here helping out as instructors from Franklin Gutierrez to Mike Cameron to Tom Wilhelmsen to Alvin Davis.
7) Josh Naylor finally didn't wear a jersey. As someone on social media pointed out, it must have been laundry day.
9) M's manager Dan Wilson spoke in an early-morning interview session, noting that Dane Dunning will start the Cactus League opener on Friday afternoon against the San Diego Padres. First pitch is set for 12:10 p.m. PT. There's more from Wilson here, including how the team plans to handle the World Baseball Classic position players.
10) Gabe Speier also pitched in the bullpen and looked solid, throwing both fastballs and sliders that we saw. Ryan Bliss stood in and Austin Nola caught.
