SEATTLE — A pair of seventh-inning home runs from catcher Jhonny Pereda and left fielder Randy Arozarena lifted the Seattle Mariners to a much-needed 5-4 win against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday at T-Mobile Park.
The Mariners entered Wednesday 1-4 on their current homestand and needed the victory against the White Sox to avoid losing two consecutive series.
Seattle improved to 24-27 on the season but remained one game behind division rivals, the Texas Rangers, for the final wild card spot in the American League.
"The priority here is to get us playing our consistent baseball," Mariners manager Dan Wilson said in a postgame interview Wednesday. "Getting out and feeling like every night, we're putting the (at-bats) up, we're getting the pitching we want and getting into a little bit of a flow and a little bit of a rhythm. ... Finding some flow there is on the agenda there."
With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Pereda broke the tie and gave Seattle a 3-2 lead with a lead-off solo home run to left field. It was his first major league home run.
Pereda entered Wednesday with three base-hits, all singles, in five games with the Mariners.
"I wasn't expecting the homer," Pereda said after the game. "I was focusing on getting a good hit. (But) it happened. As soon as I hit the ball, and I saw the angle, it was perfect."
Center fielder Julio Rodriguez reached later in the inning with a one-out double and was moved to third on a groundout hit by first baseman Josh Naylor.
With his outfield partner at third, Arozarena hit a two-run shot to left-center field that bolstered the M's advantage to 5-2.
Before Pereda and Arozarena's respective yard-clearing hits, Seattle and Chicago's offenses went back-and-forth and proved unable to break the game open despite several opportunities to do so.
The Mariners struck first after designated hitter Dominic Canzone hit an RBI double in the bottom of the second. White Sox designated hitter Andrew Benintendi knotted the game 1-1 with an RBI single in the top of the third.
Seattle retook the lead after third baseman Patrick Wisdom hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth. Chicago first baseman Munetaka Murakami tied it 2-2 after an RBI single in the top of the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, with one out and runners on second and third, Pereda caught Chicago second baseman Chase Meidroth stealing home for the second out of the inning. Catcher Drew Romo grounded out to end the frame.
The White Sox also had an opportunity to take the lead before the Mariners in the top of second.
Chicago loaded the bases with no outs after starting pitcher Emerson Hacock issued three consecutive walks.
Hancock struck out center fielder Tristan Peters and induced a 4-6-3 double play hit by Romo to end the inning.
Hancock finished the game with four strikeouts, three walks, a wild pitch and two earned runs allowed on five hits in five innings pitched.
"(The second) felt really similar to the inning in Chicago where you just kind of lose it a little bit," Hancock said Wednesday. "I think in that moment, you're just trying to slow it down. Realize (you're) a couple good pitches away."
After Arozarena and Pereda's respective homers in the seventh, the White Sox managed one last push in the final two innings.
In the top of the eighth, Peters grounded into a fielder's choice. Shortstop Colt Emerson, who was making his second start at the position in the big leagues Wednesday, committed an error on the throw to first, which brought home Meidroth.
In the top of the ninth, lead-off pinch-hitter Randal Grichuk hit a solo home run to right field on the first pitch of the at-bat. That blast cut Seattle's lead to the eventual final of 5-4.
Mariners left-handed reliever Jose A. Ferrer, who gave up the lead-off homer to Grichuk, hunkered down and struck out Murakami, pinch-hitter Derek Hill and infielder Colson Montgomery to clinch the save and the win for the M's.
Seattle will have a much-needed off-day Thursday before embarking on a six-game road trip, beginning with a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals.
Game one between the Mariners and Royals will be at 4:40 p.m. PT on Friday at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, MO.
Logan Gilbert will start for Seattle and Noah Cameron will start for Kansas City.
