Alex Hoppe was acquired this offseason from the Boston Red Sox.
In need of bullpen relief, the Seattle Mariners are calling up hard-throwing right-hander Alex Hoppe from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday afternoon.
In a corresponding move, Casey Legumina is being designated for assignment, according to a report from Daniel Kramer of MLB.com.
Hoppe, 27, was drafted in the sixth round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox and acquired by the Mariners this offseason. He has always been known as a hard thrower with spotty command, but he's been excellent for Tacoma this season.
In eight appearances for the Rainiers, Hoppe is 0-1 with an ERA of 0.00. He's struck out 12 batters in 8.0 innings and only issued three walks. He's given up just four hits and is 4-of-4 in save opportunities.
We spoke on Tuesday's edition of the 'Refuse to Lose' podcast with Rainiers broadcaster Rylee Pay, who had this to say:
"...but Alex Hoppe, like you said, a guy who stuck out. I saw him during my time when I was with the Red Sox system in Portland, and so got to see him at Double-A and prior to his experience in Worcester (Triple-A) as well in the Red Sox system. But even from the time that I saw him at Double-A, his fastball sticks out. It is high heat and it is just nasty. And then you match that with the slider as well and it's just a really solid, solid, combo for him.
Seattle Mariners pitcher Alex Hoppe (48) pitches during the fifth inning in Peoria, Arizona. Arianna Grainey-Imagn ImagesAnd I know he has been excited to be in this system too. I talked with him early on, around opening weekend about just being with Seattle, first impressions. And he's excited to be in this system where pitching is such an emphasis and just the culture around it and how they have kind of welcomed him in and just the mentality and the positivity behind their pitching philosophy.
So he is definitely as advertised. He's kind of come in more of a closer role for us early on as well. He's gotten the ball and played in plenty of high-leverage situations. He's 4-for-4 in saves this season and he's been solid."
Hoppe joined the podcast as well (in Dec. 2025) to express his excitement at being part of the M's organization. You can listen to that here.
Hoppe played his college ball at UNC Greensboro. In 44 appearances in 2025, mostly at Triple-A, he went 1-3 with a 4.55 ERA and six saves. He struck out 73 batters in 61.1 innings, but he also walked 34.
Following the development of his command will continue to be the biggest storyline of his time with the Mariners.
The Mariners enter play on Tuesday at 10-14 overall. They'll play the Athletics at 6:40 p.m. PT.
