Lazaro Montes, the Mariners power-hitting outfield prospect, will be getting his big league break.
The Seattle Mariners are coming off a disappointing sweep at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays this weekend at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.
The series sweep was accentuated with a 7-0, shutout loss against the Blue Jays on Sunday, which capped off the first leg of a six-game road trip for the Mariners.
The next leg of Seattle's road trip will be against the Boston Red Sox, with game one set to begin at 3:45 p.m. PT on Monday at Fenway Park in Boston.
During the series, the Mariners will be joined by one of the potent power hitters in the minor leagues.
According to a report on "X" from baseball reporter Francys Romero, which was later corroborated by Seattle Times reporter Ryan Divish, Seattle will be calling up top 100 prospect/outfielder Lazaro Montes when active major league rosters expand from 26 to 28 players Sept. 1.
Montes is ranked as the 56th prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline and has developed a reputation as one of, if not the best home run hitter, in the minor leagues.
Montes began the season with the Double-A Arkansas Travelers before he was promoted to the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers on July 7.
Since being promoted to Triple-A, Montes has slashed .274/.369/.571 with a .940 OPS in 44 games and has hit 13 doubles and 13 home runs with 30 RBIs.
Across the entire season, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound outfielder .249/.369/.558 with a .927 OPS in 123 games and has hit 24 doubles, a triple and 38 homers and 96 RBIs.
Montes first joined the Mariners organization as an international free agent out of Cuba on Jan. 15, 2022. He was a part of a stacked international recruiting class that also included fellow top 100 prospect, infielder/outfielder Michael Arroyo.
The 21-year-old mainly plays right field, and hits left-handed, both roles currently handled by on-and-off designated hitters Dominic Canzone and Taylor Ward.
Ward, who's provided some right-handed hitting coverage on the team's roster, has struggled since the team acquired him in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles on Aug. 3.
Canzone has received more regular at-bats against left-handed pitchers. According to an article from Seattle Times reporter Adam Jude, Montes is expected to receive regular at-bats with Seattle, which will likely lead to lineups with both Canzone and Montes in them.
Following their loss against Toronto, the Mariners are five games out of first place in the American League West and five games out of the final wild card spot in the American League.
