According to The Athletic, teams are starting to open up their perception of how Polanco could help them in 2026.

On Wednesday, we heard that the Seattle Mariners have a desire to bring back the group that got them to Game 7 of the American League Championship Series this past October.

That means that Seattle hopes to re-sign Josh Naylor, Eugenio Suarez and Jorge Polanco again in free agency.

And with regards to Polanco, it appears like the M's will have real competition for his services. We don't know a specific market for the veteran yet, but we know that teams are getting creative in how they view him.

Teams are considering Jorge Polanco at first base and third as well as second base, people familiar with talks regarding the free agent said.

    About Polanco's 2025

Polanco began the year at 31 years old, turning 32 in July. After an injury-riddled 2024, he turned in a gem of a 2025, hitting .265 with 26 home runs, 78 RBIs and a 134 OPS+ in 138 games. He flashed power from both sides of the plate, and he gets an added bonus for the playoff performance that he turned in.

He homered twice off Tarik Skubal in the division series, then brought in the game-winning run in the 15th inning of Game 5. He also had the game-winning hits in the first two games of the American League Championship Series against the Blue Jays.

How the Mariners could view him

Really, in any way. The M's tried him out at third base at the beginning of last season, but quickly pivoted him to designated hitter as he suffered an oblique flare-up early on. If they can't bring back Suarez, they could re-examine Polanco at third. They could utilize him at designated hitter again most often while also giving him time at second base.

They could use him primarily at second if they think Cole Young is not the guy for the every day job. If they can't re-sign Naylor, then Polanco at first base could be a realistic option.

    The sales pitch

Given that there will be other suitors, the M's have to use the advantages they have in the market. They can tout their great clubhouse culture, the fact that they are close a World Series-caliber roster, and the success that Polanco has already had in Seattle. That familiarity for him should matter as he looks at other potential homes.

    The money

Two or three years seems to be the prevailing thought, with Polanco getting anywhere between $24 and $45 million. However, if more teams are interested, the money could swell.
