Could they both be division champs?

The Seattle Seahawks rolled over the Carolina Panthers 27-10 on Sunday morning in Charlotte, N.C., moving to 13-3 on the season.

Because of how tightly contested the NFC West is this season, the Seahawks have still done nothing more than clinch a playoff berth. The Week 18 showdown with the San Francisco 49ers will determine the NFC West winner and the No. 1 seed in the looming NFC playoffs.

The 49ers are 12-4 but they've already beaten the Seahawks this season (Week 1).

    Shared history

If the Seahawks are able to win and take the division, it will mark a historic achievement for Seattle sports. The Seahawks and the Seattle Mariners have never won their divisions in the same season. The Mariners won the American League West this past season, eventually advancing all the way to the American League Championship Series.

    Mariners divisional titles

The Mariners have four American League West championships: 1995, 1997, 2001 and 2025.

Seattle also made the playoffs in 2000 and 2022, but they were a wild card. They have advanced to the ALCS three times (2000, '01 and '25), but have never reached the World Series.

    Seahawks divisional titles

The Seahawks have won 11 divisional titles across both the AFC and the NFC.

The won the AFC West in 1988 and 1999, then won the NFC West in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. They also won the NFC West in 2010, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2020.

The Seahawks advanced to the Super Bowl in 2005, '13 and '14, winning their lone championship in 2013.

    How these teams are similar

They have a lot of similarities, actually. First, they have head coaches/managers (Dan Wilson, Mike MacDonald), that don't say a whole lot at the podium, but show an unwavering belief and commitment to their players.

Next, the Seahawks are built on defense, whereas the Mariners are built on pitching. And finally, the Seahawks have sometimes lacked a consistent offense, causing them to rely on the big play. The Mariners, at times, lacked a consistent offense and relied on the home run.

    Other news and notes
