The Mariners and Seahawks have provided Seattle sports fans with something we've never seen before.

Brady Farkas on the most recent edition of the 'Refuse to Lose' podcast.

When the Seattle Seahawks captured the NFC West title and the No. 1 seed in the looming NFC playoffs on Saturday night, they created a unique shared history with the Seattle Mariners.

The 2025 season is the first season in which the Mariners and Seahawks have won their divisions in the same respective campaigns.

After the Mariners fell painstakingly short of getting to the World Series, the Seahawks will have a chance to win the Super Bowl.

Regardless of what happens for the Seahawks, the last calendar year has been unlike anything we've ever seen in Seattle sports.

We talked about this on the most recent edition of the 'Refuse to Lose' podcast:

MORE MARINERS STORIES

In my own words

"What we’ve had in 2025 over the last 9 months, okay, and now into 2026, what we’ve had since Opening Day of 2025 has been the best collective time in Seattle sports history.

For the Mariners to win the division, for Cal Raleigh to hit 60 home runs and come painfully close to winning the MVP, for the Mariners to vanquish the Astros in order to win the division on their home field, for the Mariners to then win the division series, for the Mariners to win a division series game 5 in 15 innings, and then to get so close to the World Series—I know the end outcome was heartbreaking, but the ride that they took us on was special and was unforgettable for a lot of people, myself included. And like, I know the narrative. I’ve lived the narrative. I’ve been part of the narrative.

There were many people that were waiting for the Mariners to fail. They were waiting for them to crater. And to their credit, the Mariners almost did in August. I get that. But they ultimately didn’t. They pushed back. They went on the road. They beat the Astros. They got down 1-0 in the ALDS at home and then beat the Cy Young winner, the back-to-back Cy Young winner in Tarik Skubal.

They then beat Skubal again in Game 5 after it looked like they were going to blow it, right? They were up 1-0, then they’re down 2-1. It looks like they’re going to blow it, but they ultimately come back and win.

It was a historic year for the Mariners. It was a magical year for all of us. It was relentless. It was a year full of fight and pushback.

And we are seeing the same thing here with the Seahawks now at the end of 2025 and into 2026. I mean, for the Seahawks to move on from a potential Hall of Fame coach (Pete Carroll) two years ago, to move on from a generally popular quarterback in Geno Smith, to move on from a team Hall of Famer to be in Tyler Lockett, to to move on from a Pro Bowler in DK Metcalf, to do all of that, and then to be in a position to be 14-3 and get the one seed and get the first round bye and get home field advantage—that’s incredible.

And I don’t know if the Seahawks are going to win the Super Bowl, but I know that they have a damn good chance, and that the fans of Seattle in the calendar year 2025, now into 2026, are going to get multiple cracks at a championship. That doesn’t happen very often in the same city."

Up next

For the Seahawks? They'll enjoy a first-round bye this weekend. They'll await the lowest remaining seed in the NFC playoffs in the divisional round. That will be either the Carolina Panthers, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers or Green Bay Packers.

For the Mariners? They are just five weeks away from spring training beginning in Peoria, Ariz. We'll have live coverage from Peoria so stay tuned for details.
