The Mariners lost 6-5 against the Cleveland Guardians in extra innings. Here's what you need to know about Bryan Woo, Dan Wilson, Julio Rodriguez and more.

SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners suffered a difficult loss on Saturday night, falling 6-5 against the Cleveland Guardians at T-Mobile Park. The M's lost in extra-innings for the first time this season. The game was tied 3-3 after the full nine.

The Mariners are now 1-2 on the season, while the Guardians are 2-1.

Here's what you need to know from the contest, in no particular order.

1) Julio Rodriguez comes up with a big knock

Rodriguez had been hitless through the first two-plus games, but he delivered a big knock to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. Trailing 3-2, Rodriguez ripped a single to right center off elite closer Cade Smith. The hit came on a two-strike pitch.

Regardless of the final outcome, the Mariners can't win if Rodriguez isn't helping carry the lineup. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction.

2) Woo starts strong, but falters late

Making his first start of the season, Bryan Woo dominated through five innings, allowing no runs in that span. However, he walked the leadoff man in the sixth inning and was burned, giving up two runs in that frame.

A 2-0 Mariners lead turned into a 2-2 game and Woo was denied the chance at a win. He had nine strikeouts, reaching 400 for his career. While he was proud of that accomplishment, he put the loss on himself after the game.

3) Luke Raley remains hot

The Mariners trailed 6-3 in the bottom of the 10th inning after allowing three runs in the top half. With one out in the 10th, Raley came into pinch hit, socking his third homer in three games. He had 22 home runs in 2024 and if he can approach that again, this lineup is much deeper.

4) Managerial questions abound

Dan Wilson found himself in the crosshairs in this one, on multiple fronts.

First, he pulled Rob Refnsynder in the fourth inning in favor of Dominic Canzone. With a runner at second and two outs, Wilson wanted to leverage a run-scoring opportunity when a right-hander was brought in, but Canzone was retired and Refnsyder was burned for later in the game when the Mariners could have used a lefty slayer.

Instead, Canzone had to get pinch-hit for against a lefty, which got Ryan Bliss multiple at-bats late. He ended up striking out twice.

Furthermore, Wilson got grief in the top of the seventh inning. Eduard Bazardo got two quick outs before walking the eight and nine hitters. At that point, Wilson stuck with Bazardo instead of going to Gabe Speier for lefty Steven Kwan.

Kwan flared a single to left, giving Cleveland the lead 3-2.

There was some question about whether or not Speier (who was throwing) was actually ready to face Kwan, or if he should have been ready and waiting.

Here's what Wilson said after the game:

5) Walks really hurt the Mariners

Regardless of how you feel about the handling of the bullpen, we can all agree that Woo can't walk the leadoff guy in the sixth and Bazardo can't walk the No. 8 and No. 9 hitters in the seventh. It just can't happen.

6) And neither can this

We can argue about the managing, and the bullpen, but the Mariners went 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base. They struck out 12 more times, marking three consecutive games of double-digit K's.

7) Chase DeLauter is a problem

The rookie now has four homers in his first three big league games, becoming the second player in history to do that (Trevor Story). This time? He hit a 97 mph Andres Munoz fastball out the opposite way.

Hard to be mad at that. Just tip your cap.

The Mariners and Guardians will finish out the series on Sunday afternoon at 4:20 p.m. PT. The game will air on Peacock. Emerson Hancock is on the mound.
