The Mariners and Cardinals played a seesaw contest that saw the M's come out on top. Here's what you need to know.
The Seattle Mariners played their wildest game of the season on Saturday afternoon, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 11-9 at Busch Stadium.
The M's led 2-0 in the top of the first before the Cardinals rallied to tie it. The M's went back up 4-2, but the Cardinals took a 7-4 lead. The Mariners clawed back to tie it at 7-7 before falling behind once again. In the top of the eighth, the M's tied it at 9-9 before ultimately winning with a two-run single in the top of the ninth.
Here's the cliff notes version of what you need to know:
Tough day for Bryan Woo
Bryan Woo is one of the best pitchers in baseball and this outing doesn't change that. But, it was arguably the roughest day of Woo's career. The All-Star went just three innings, giving up seven earned runs on four home runs. He only had one strikeout.
He gave up two runs in the first and five runs in the third.
The M's flashed the power too
The Mariners got home runs from Julio Rodriguez (2), Will Wilson (1), and Cole Young (3). It was the first home run of Wilson's career, and Mitch Garver had a home run robbed by Nathan Church, marking the fifth home run robbery against the M's this season.
Wilson becomes the third Mariner this season to have his first M's hit be a home run, joining Brendan Donovan and Rob Refsnyder.
Dan Wilson pulls the right levers
The people who don't like manager Dan Wilson will have to eat some crow in this one.
Wilson pinch-hit for Will Wilson with Dominic Canzone, who hit an RBI single. He then had Leo Rivas bunt in the eighth inning, which worked out. Connor Joe pinch-hit for Luke Raley to bring in two runs in the eighth and Rivas had the game-winning two-run single in the ninth.
Bullpen wise, he went to Jose Ferrer early, staying with him for two innings, and he had Matt Brash and Andres Munoz available for the eighth and ninth.
Outside of the home run that Cooper Criswell allowed in his second inning of work, there's not much negative to say about Wilson in this one.
Every starter had a hit
And Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodriguez, Josh Naylor, Garver and Young all had multi-hit games. The Mariners had 19 hits in total, a far cry from the frustration of much of the early season.
On deck
The Mariners and Cardinals will wrap up the series on Sunday at 11:15 a.m. PT as Emerson Hancock pitches against Michael McGreevy. The Mariners are 13-15 while the Cardinals are 14-12.
