SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners bullpen has dealt with a series of injuries this season, and that bad stretch of luck continued on the team's most recent road trip.

The Mariners lost two right-handed relievers, Matt Brash and Cooper Criswell, to the 15-day IL.

Brash was placed on the IL June 10 (retroactive to June 9) due to a right lat strain.

Criswell landed on the shelf June 9. His injury designation was originally a right shoulder strain. Seattle general manager Justin Hollander clarified in an interview before a game against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday at T-Mobile Park that Criswell was dealing with a right pec strain that "came out of nowhere."

This current IL stint is Brash's second due to a lat strain. According to Hollander, the current strain is closer to the righty's shoulder whereas his previous strain (which kept him out from April 30-May 20) was lower end of his lat.

According to Hollander, Brash and Criswell are set to return around the trade deadline, which is scheduled for Aug. 3.

"We'll re-MRI in three-to-four weeks from the date of the injury and then build back up from there depending on what the MRI shows," Hollander said Tuesday. "Unfortunate to lose both guys, obviously, on the same day."

Brash has a 0.54 ERA this season with 15 strikeouts in 16.2 innings pitched across 20 appearances.

Criswell has posted a 3.52 ERA and has fanned 23 hitters in 30.2 innings of work across 26 outings.

The pair of righties will apparently be joined in their tentative trade deadline returns by another right-handed reliever, Carlos Vargas.

Vargas has been out the entire season due to a right lat strain. He suffered a setback earlier in the season in his ramp-up, which delayed his return.

Per Hollander, Vargas has begun a throwing program and is set to return around late July and early August on the same general ETA as Brash and Criswell.

"It's been a really long road for (Vargas) to get back at it," Hollander said. "He's looking at kind of a similar timeline to Brash at this stage. Something around the trade deadline, I think is reasonable. We'll see how it progresses. Could be longer, could be shorter."

Vargas had a 3.97 ERA and struck out 54 batters in 77 innings pitched across 70 appearances last year, which was his first "full" season in the majors.

-- First baseman Josh Naylor is day-to-day with a wrist injury and will have an off-day against the Orioles on Tuesday.

-- Outfielder Randy Arozarena is also day-to-day and will be out for Tuesday's game due to a hamstring issue. He'll get an MRI on Tuesday.

"I've really never seen anything quite like this on the position player side," Hollander said. "I've been part of this in like the 2018-19 window, '17 maybe, with pitchers. But this is very unique with this many position players (injured). Every day feels like a little bit of a juggling act."

Both Arozarena and Naylor could be back in the lineup for game two of the series Wednesday.

-- INF/OF Brendan Donovan is back with the team at T-Mobile Park and has begun a running progression. It'll be a 10-day-to-two-week progression. When Donovan gets through his progression, he'll begin a rehab assignment, which is expected to be the end of June or Early July.

Donovan will move all over the field in a "super utility" role upon his return rather than play exclusively third base as he did before his injury.

-- Infielder Will Wilson was pulled off his current rehab assignment due to a finger injury. He'll visit hand surgeon Dr. Donald Sheridan in the upcoming days.

-- Minor league outfielder Brennen Davis is "on the way back" from a hamstring strain, which landed him on the seven-day minor league IL on June 2.

"Shouldn't be that much longer," Hollander said.
