At 56-63, the Seattle Mariners once near-lock playoffs odds are on life support, down to just a mere 31.5 percent.

Seattle has lost five of its last six games, was just swept at home by the Tampa Bay Rays, scoring a putrid four runs in three games. The offense has scored just eight runs in the last six games (8-0 loss, 4-2 win, 11-0 loss, 2-1 loss, 3-2 loss, 4-1 loss.). It was an embarrassing weekend on the same weekend that the team honored the 50 greatest players in team history and the criticisms are coming in every direction.

While the playoff chances are fleeting and the feelings of optimism are almost non-existent, the Mariners are still just 4.0 games back of the Houston Astros for first place in the American League West, and they are only 3.5 games back of the third and final wild card spot too.

The M's have five games left this season against the Astros and three against the Texas Rangers, so they have direct chances to improve their spots in the standings, but if they are going to make those games matter, they have to start immediately by playing well in a three-game series against the New York Yankees this Tuesday-Thursday.

Yankee Stadium is a typical house of horrors for the Mariners, as the M's have won only one series there since 2017. They were swept in New York a year ago.

At this point, it seems like almost nothing the Mariners do will make any difference, but we'll ask the question anyways: What can the Mariners do try to salvage this season?

The Mariners already fired assistant hitting coach Bobby Magallanes, so would firing Seitzer be next in the progression?

The M's are tied for last in team batting average of .229, are 28th in OPS at .683 and are last in runs scored at 462. Is Seitzer the reason for that? Not necessarily. After all, fans can't really have it both ways:

If you don't think Seitzer had anything to do with Cal Raleigh's great season in 2025, then you can't blame him for the failures this year. The same is true for Julio Rodriguez's regression and any one else you think is slumping this year that was good previously. If you think he elevated them last year, did he all of a sudden become a much worse coach in one season? It seems unlikely.

I frankly don't see the team firing Hall of Famer Edgar Martinez, so they'd likely elevate him until the end of the season. It worked in 2024, could it work again? Martinez would be the only voice in the room in this case, which could simplify the message.

I am on record as saying this over and over and over again. I don't believe Dan Wilson deserves to be fired.

I believe that getting to the American League Championship Series in your first full year as manager should cloak you from a bad season the next year. However, if you are looking for levers to pull, this is one that can be pulled.

A "new voice" worked for the Philadelphia Phillies and seems to be working for the Boston Red Sox, could it work here too?

In this case, Manny Acta would likely be promoted.

I don't believe that a total roster overhaul is necessarily the most prudent thing to do, but if you are looking for moves: Michael Arroyo could come up and probably take the place of Weston Wilson. Ryan Bliss could probably come up and take the place of Leo Rivas.

If you really want to get nutty, Lazaro Montes could come up. He'd strike out a ton, but he'd have a chance to hit some home runs, which is something the M's aren't doing right now.

And of course, there's Kade Anderson, who is just waiting to be called up after Aug. 15.
