According to veteran reporter Francys Romero, the Seattle Mariners agreed to a minor league deal with infielder Andy Ibanez on Sunday night.

Ibanez will report to Triple-A Tacoma, where the Rainiers are starting a series with Sacramento on Tuesday.

While this could just be a simple depth transaction, it could also mean something more.

Now 33 years old, Ibanez is a six-year veteran of the Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers, Athletics and New York Mets. A lifetime .250 hitter, he has 28 career home runs and 10 stolen bases. He's played only 14 games in the big leagues this year, hitting .087, but he did hit .239 for the Tigers just a year ago in 91 games.

He offers defensive versatility, having played 171 career games at second base and 142 at third. He's also played 45 at first base, 31 in the outfield and six at shortstop.

1) On one hand, Tacoma needs more depth, so maybe it's just that. The Mariners have recently pulled Leo Rivas and Brock Rodden up from Triple-A, so there simply aren't a lot of bodies down there that are capable of playing in the infield right now.

2) Also: What's the latest on Colt Emerson? The 21-year-old shortstop was put on the injured list on Friday with left wrist inflammation. He's going to visit a specialist and surgery is reportedly not off the table. If that's the case, he'll miss the rest of the season (presumably), meaning the Rainiers and Mariners both could need additional help for a longer period of time.

3) And what does it mean for J.P. Crawford? Also on the injured list, Crawford hasn't been at the first six games of this road trip. That leads us to believe that he's not particularly close to returning at this time. Is Ibanez also insurance against a longer Crawford absence? That's possible too. Crawford is a free agent at the end of the year.

The Mariners are 3-3 through the first six games of this nightmarish nine-game road trip. They'll get the most difficult leg from Tuesday-Thursday as they'll visit the Milwaukee Brewers, who have the best record in the sport at 77-48. The Brewers just took three-of-four from the World Champion Dodgers.

The Mariners will enter the series at 59-66 and 2.5 games back of the third and final wild card spot. They are also just four games back of the Houston Astros in the American League West.
