At 26 years old, Brennen Davis is making a huge impact at Seattle Mariners spring training. The former Top 100 prospect, who has dealt with injuries throughout his career, is hitting .407 with four homers, four doubles and six RBIs entering play on Wednesday.
He's getting extended chances for playing time in the wake of Julio Rodriguez, Randy Arozarena and Dominic Canzone playing in the World Baseball Classic, and he's certainly making the most of it. His exit velocities, consistently over 100 mph and topping 115 at times, are astonishing. He recently took Milwaukee Brewers star Jacob Misiorowski deep.
Some fans are already asking about Davis's chances to make the Opening Day roster, and I was recently asked about it on a recent episode of the 'Mitch Unfiltered' podcast.
And I'm not saying that Davis can't contribute to the Mariners in 2026, but he won't be doing it as a member of the Opening Day roster, which I explained on the most recent 'Refuse to Lose' podcast.
"This team has $6.25 million invested in Rob Refsnyder, a right-handed hitting outfielder who, by the way, is up with Paul Goldschmidt and Aaron Judge in terms of righties who hit lefties the best. Iván Herrera. Guys who hit lefties the best in Major League Baseball. Rob Refsnyder is going to be on this team as long as he is healthy.
They've got $5 million invested in Victor Robles. I don't know what Victor Robles is gonna look like over the course of 162, but $5 million is a real investment that they have in him. They are not going to just cut him in spring training to put Brennan Davis on the team. I know they cut Mitch Haniger a year ago. Victor Robles has more to offer right now than Mitch Haniger had then.
So, from a purely financial standpoint, they are not going to move on from their right-handed hitting outfielders. Now, if somebody gets hurt, then sure. If May 15 comes and Victor Robles is hitting .047 then yeah, I think then we're having that conversation. But for the money invested, for the potential these guys have shown, for the track records that they have in this uniform, these guys are going to get the first opportunity.
Brennen Davis on Feb. 22. Frank Bowen IV/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn ImagesBrennan Davis is gonna go to Tacoma. And if he's tearing up the PCL through April and Victor Robles is not, we can have a different conversation. Or if somebody gets hurt, we can have a different conversation.
But Brennan Davis is not even on the 40-man roster right now, so you'd have to jettison somebody off the 40-man. You'd have to eat the money invested. It's too difficult right now for a guy who would not be an everyday player. Brennan Davis would not be an everyday player here, because the Mariners are gonna operate with this quartet platoon system as long as everybody's healthy.
It's a great story. It's a great spring story, and it's a 'put this in your back pocket for later in the season.' As you think about when the Michael Arroyos of the world can come up, you could also think about maybe when Colt Emerson, if he doesn't make the team, is coming up, you could think about Brendan Davis because he might be able to contribute to this team this year as they try to go win the World Series.
He's just not going to do it on Opening Day."
The Mariners take on the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday afternoon at 1:10 p.m. PT. Davis is not in the lineup.
