Wilson and Raleigh share the distinction of being the only two catchers in MLB history to accomplish a rare feat.

SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners are one win away from the World Series for the first time in the 48-year history of the franchise.

The Mariners took a 3-2 lead over the Toronto Blue Jays in the best-of-seven American League Championship Series after a 6-2 win in Game 5 of the ALCS on Friday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.

The Mariners scored five of their six runs in the eighth inning. Catcher Cal Raleigh hit a game-tying solo home run to lead off the inning and third baseman Eugenio Suarez hit a go-ahead grand slam for the eventual final of 6-2.

Most of the discussion following the game pertained to the pair of home runs — arguably the two most important homers in franchise history.

But there were several plays during the game that prevented Toronto from running up the score against Seatlte.

One of those plays came in the top of the fourth when the Blue Jays had the bases loaded and one out. Toronto third baseman Ernie Clement spiked a soft ground ball right in front of home plate.

In a heads-up play, Raleigh scooped the ball while touching home plate and delivered a throw to Josh Naylor at first to complete the inning-ending 2-3 double play.

It was a rare double play and a solid defensive display from Raleigh, who didn't receive a Gold Glove nomination for the catcher position this season despite being the American League's Platinum Glove winner last year.

The 2-3 double play is so rare that, according to a post on "X" from MLB, it's only been done one other time in playoff history.

The only other catcher to start a 2-3 double play was Raleigh's current manager and former Mariners catcher, Dan Wilson.

Wilson accomplished that feat in the 2000 ALCS against the New York Yankees.

Including this year, Seattle has made the playoffs six times in its history and the ALCS four times. Wilson was a part of the first three ALCS teams as a player and is a part of this year's in his first full year as the organization's skipper.

Wilson, Raleigh and the rest of the Mariners will be looking to do something that Wilson wasn't able to do in his time as a player: make a World Series.

The team will have an opportunity to do that in Game 6 of the ALCS at 5:03 p.m. PT on Sunday at Rogers Centre in Toronto.
