Ryan Bliss injured his meniscus while on a rehab assignment with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers

SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners have been plagued with injuries for most of the season, but had recently been working in many of the ailing players back.

Outfielders Victor Robles and Luke Raley both returned to the lineup in the last month after months-long stints on the injured list that kept them out for months.

Another player, infielder Ryan Bliss, was nearing a return from his own injury, but will have to wait to make his return until 2026.

Bliss tore his right meniscus "on the bases" while on rehab assignment with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers on Sept. 5, according to Mariners general manager Justin Hollander. Bliss will undergo season-ending knee surgery on Monday.

Bliss had been on the IL since April 9 due to torn left biceps he suffered in a game against the Houston Astros on April 8. He was on a rehab assignment with Tacoma to work his way to a return.

Hollander said he expects Bliss to be ready by spring training. The latter was expected to be a candidate to compete in fall and winter ball due to him not receiving a high number of at-bats this year, but won't compete in the offseason leagues due to the surgery.

Bliss entered 2025 as Seattle's starting second baseman. He won the job in a spring training competition with Dylan Moore, Leo Rivas and Cole Young.

Bliss scored one run in 11 games before his biceps injury and hit a double and a home run with three RBIs. He slashed .200/.282/.314 with a .596 OPS.

The second-year infielder hit three doubles with seven RBIs in six games with the Rainiers. He slashed .385/.500/.615 with a 1.115 OPS and stole two bases in five opportunities.

"We're really disappointed for Ryan and for us," Hollander said in a pregame news scrum Monday. "Because we really thought he could provide meaningful impact for us as we got into the latter stage of the month and into the playoffs, hopefully. He just brings a skill set that's unique. He can really run, he's good on the bases. Obviously he can hit left-handed pitching well. So, it's disappointing for us, but I think that probably pales in comparison for the disappointment for him. He had a real runway this year to show he could do some things in the big league level."

Bliss was picked in the second round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Auburn by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Seattle acquired him in a trade with Arizona on July 31, 2023. He made his major league debut with the Mariners on May 27, 2024.

Bliss has multiple years of pre-arbitration left on his contract.
