The Seattle Mariners international scouting department has led to several of the most notable prospects in baseball over the last decade.
Franchise superstar, and three-time All-Star, Julio Rodriguez was an international signee out of the Dominican Republic in 2017. Two of the Mariners' seven top 100 prospects (per MLB Pipeline), outfielder Lazaro Montes and Michael Arroyo, were 2022 signees.
Seattle has remained active in the international signing period outside of those aforementioned players. In the 2026 international period, which just opened up on Jan. 15, the M's signed outfielder Juan Rijo, who was ranked 12th in MLB Pipeline's top 50 international prospects list.
But even though the period for this year just opened, the M's have kept an eye out out for the future as well. They reportedly agreed to a preemptive $3.7 million deal with 2030 prospect Dylan Perez.
According to new reports, Seattle looks like it won't have to wait until 2030 to sign another blue-chip international player.
According to a report from Wilber Sanchez on "X" (@wilberdata), that was corroborated by Hector Gomez and Joe Doyle, the Mariners and class of 2027 switch-hitting shortstop Mairon De La Rosa have a verbal agreement in place worth $3.8 million.
De La Rosa had an agreement in place with the New York Yankees worth $4.3 million but the deal fell through. He's considered by many analysts to be one of, if not the top hitter, available in the next international signing period.
In addition to De La Rosa, the Mariners also have an agreement in place for another switch-hitting shortstop, Eudi Yuten. The pre-agreement in place is reportedly worth $4 million. Both Yuten and De La Rosa hail from the Dominican Republic.
Yuten is also a highly-touted prospect. Doyle, a prospect guru who recently appeared on the "Refuse to Lose" podcast, has Yuten graded as a better prospect than De La Rosa.
According to a post from Doyle on "X," De La Rosa grades out better hitting from the left side than the right and has "big ceiling (and) volatility."
Sanchez referred to both prospects as "five-tool" players.
Being able to land both players will give the Mariners one of the best international signing periods of 2027. Although, with $7.8 million tied between two players, it will likely restrict what Seattle can do with the rest of the recruiting class.
