The Marlins surrendered four runs in the third inning following an error by catcher Joe Mack. The Fish responded in the 7th to even the score 4-4.

The Washington Nationals defeated the Miami Marlins 5-4 in the second game of this weekend’s four game series on Saturday in Washington D.C. The Nationals lead the series 2-0. 

Five Washington pitchers combined to strikeout 17 Miami batters before Dylan Crews hit an RBI single with two outs to secure the win and clinch at least a tie in this series. 

The scoring started in the third inning when Miami catcher Joe Mack overthrew first base after Crews hit a slow roller to the mound, allowing two National runners to score off the error. 

Brady House hit an RBI single scoring Crews in the third inning. Jorvit Vivas hit an RBI double scoring Daylen Life and extending Washington’s lead to 4-0 after three innings.

Miami would come back to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning. After Leo Jimenez and Agustin Ramirez walked, first baseman Kyle Stowers doubled, scoring both runners on base. Heriberto Hernandez homered to tie the game 4-4.

In the bottom of the tenth inning, automatic runner Nasim Nunez ended up on third base after back-to-back walks for Jose Tena and Daylen Lile. Crews would hit a single that got past a diving Xavier Edwards to bring in the final run. 

Former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara pitched six innings giving up eight hits and four earned runs. He struck out three batters and walked one batter on the day. 

Marlins reliever Mike Peterson is charged with the loss after pitching 0.2 innings and giving up one hit and no earned runs. He struck out one and walked two batters. He’s now 3-4 on the season.

Orlando Ribalta earned the win for the Nationals after pitching 1.0 innings and giving up one hit and striking out two, with no earned runs. He is now 1-2 on the season. 

With the loss Miami falls to .500 at 68-68. They remain in third place in the NL East and are 13 games behind the first place Atlanta Braves. 

Miami will play game three of this road series on Sunday, Aug. 30, with the first pitch scheduled for 12:15 p.m.

Right handed pitcher Janson Junk will take the mound for Miami. Junk is 6-8 with a 4.21 ERA. He’s given up 12 home runs this year.

Left-hander Andrew Alvarez will start for the Nationals. Alvarez is 2-6 with a 3.72 ERA. He’s given up five home runs this season.
