As the Miami Marlins close out their series with LA, they took the rubber game of the three-game set, 6-4, when Agustín Ramírez hit a walk-off home run
The Miami Marlins hosted the defending World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, on Sunday to close out their weekend set; it took a little while for the Fish to catch fire.
After only notching two hits in the first six innings of the afternoon affair, the Marlins entered the ninth inning down 4-2. However, after the team rallied in the ninth, pinch hitter Augustin Ramirez hit a two-run walk-off home run to beat LA. He was greeted by his teammates, who needed an emotional lift after going 3-7 in their last 10 games.
"There was something contagious around the dugout- great energy," infielder Javier Sanoja said, following the victory. "Everyone was just looking for that moment. I'm pretty sure (Ramirez) was prepared; he was looking for his pitch, and thank God, he was able to do it."
With just 12 games remaining in their schedule, Miami has no realistic chance of qualifying for the postseason at this point. They're actually listed by MLB.com as having less than a one percent chance of clawing back and claiming the final National League Wild Card spot.
But this year's team would still like to go out with a bang. They certainly did so on Sunday, taking two out of three from the defending World Series Champions. The Fish had already split the first two games of the series and continued to fight it out as the sun sets on the season.
Things started off rather quietly at loanDepot Park, following the early afternoon start. The game was scoreless through three frames, but LA got on the board in the top of the fourth when outfielder Josue De Paula hit a three-run home run. Meanwhile, the Marlins went mum in the batter's box, barely making a sound. The South Florida Nine couldn't get the bats rattling.
The Fish finally broke through when Otto Lopez, currently ranked second in the race for the National League batting title, drove home two runs. The Dodgers would add an extra tally for insurance in the ninth. Fortunately for Miami, a rally and some late-inning heroics helped them prevail.
Perez's Pitching & Post-Game Points
The Marlins (74-76) will now depart for a nine-game road trip, starting against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night. They will then travel to San Diego and Chicago before wrapping things up with a three-game home stand against NL East division leaders, the Atlanta Braves.
Perez didn't get the win, allowing three runs and failing to get further than the fifth frame. However, he didn't look bad on the hill, and he will get two more starts before the year is season is complete.
For the Dodgers, birthday boy Freddie Freeman might have donned a pointy hat, but he also wore the collar, going hitless in four at-bats.
On a side note: Prior to Sunday's contest, the Marlins inducted Dontrelle Willis into the Marlins Legend Hall of Fame. The pitcher had 68 wins, 54 losses, and 757 strikeouts in five seasons with the Marlins. He's still the only hurler in team history to have a 20-win season and ranks second on the club all-time in victories.
