Eury Pérez brings his elite fastball and recent dominance to the mound as Miami fights to overcome past struggles and stall the division-leading Braves' relentless momentum.
The Atlanta Braves have had the Miami Marlins' number all season.
The Fish have lost six out of their eight matchups against the National League East leaders, including a 4-2 contest on Tuesday that wasn’t as close as the score suggests. Miami fell despite RHP Ryan Gusto tossing a six-inning quality start, with a solo home run serving as the lone blemish on his night.
Looking to even the series. The Marlins send RHP Eury Pérez to the mound Wednesday for his 20th start of the season.
Pérez gave up two runs on three hits, two walks and six strikeouts in six innings for a no-decision in a loss against the New York Mets on July 30. He has also set a career high with 112 strikeouts so far this season.
Perez has struggled against the Braves previously in his career, posting a 10.67 ERA in four outings. The Marlins won 10-4 in Perez’s last start against Atlanta on April 13.
Perez had been one of the best pitchers in the National League in the past two months. He has posted a 1.55 ERA with 54 strikeouts over his past nine starts.
Perez continues to rely on his fastball to limit opposing lineups. He has thrown 692 four-seam fastballs this season, which leads the Miami pitching staff. It’s the fourth fastest fastball (98.3 mph) in the big leagues, according to FanGraphs.
Fish bites
Kyle Stowers has collected base hits in nine of his last 11 games, including four home runs and three doubles. The 2025 All-Star leads the Marlins with 12 home runs, 35 RBI and an .854 OPS in his last 50 games.
Marlins All-Star shortstop Otto Lopez continues to lead the Majors in hits (142), and doubles (29). He barely trails former Marlin and new Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Luis Arraez (.325) for the NL lead in batting average.
Prospect Watch
The Marlins announced the July recipients of their Next Wave Awards on Wednesday. High-A Beloit catcher Wilson Weber was named Fish of the Month for best teammate.
RHP Holt Jones was named Pitcher of the Month for posting a 1.77 FIP over 16.1 innings pitched with Double-A Pensacola in July, which was third among the organization.
Double-A Pensacola outfielder Brandon Compton was named Hitter of the Month by setting a Blue Wahoos single-month record with 12 home runs in July.
Pensacola outfielder Brendan Jones was named Defensive Player of the Month for recording a +1.6 Outs Above Average in 136.0 defensive innings in July.
Blue Wahoos outfielder Colby Shade was named Baserunner of the Month after going a perfect 16-for-16 in stolen base attempts.
