Triple-A Jacksonville looks to rebound from a bullpen collapse while High-A Beloit aims to sustain its historic scoring surge in an action-packed Sunday slate of Marlins minor league games.
Triple-A
The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp will start left-handed pitcher Patrick Monteverde (0-2, 7.11) on the mound for his fifth start (11th appearance) of the season. Jacksonville (23-21) will look to close out its road series against Memphis with a win on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. in Memphis, Tenn.
The Jumbo Shrimp, who are tied for third place in the International League East, are coming off a 7-4 loss against the Redbirds on Saturday. Andrew Pintar highlighted the offensive effort with a two-run home run in the second inning. Jacksonville was ahead 4-2 in the eighth inning, but the bullpen gave up five runs to blow the lead.
RHP Ryan Gusto, who made an appearance in the Marlins bullpen earlier this year, went seven innings on the mound with two runs (1 ER) allowed on five hits with nine strikeouts.
Double-A
The Pensacola Blue Wahoos will send RHP Luis Moreno (1-2, 6.23) to take the mound in Sunday’s series finale against the Chattanooga Lookouts at 1:00 p.m. ET in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The Blue Wahoos (19-19) have an opportunity to close out the road series with a record above .500 and move closer to the top spot in the Southern League South. Pensacola enters Sunday tied for second place and 0.5 games back in the division standings.
Pensacola secured the series win with a 6-2 victory on Saturday behind the stellar pitching performance by RHP Karson Milbrandt. Miami’s No. 9 prospect pitched six scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts and has not allowed a run in 17.0 consecutive innings. He leads all of Double-A in ERA (1.24) so far this season.
Marlins No. 19 prospect RF Fenwick Trimble highlighted the Pensacola offense with a three-RBI home run in the top of the 1st. He leads the club with 34 hits, which puts him third among Marlins minor leaguers.
High-A
The Beloit Sky Carp (17-20) look to follow up on their season-high 17-run outburst on Saturday with another win over the Peoria Chiefs on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. in Beloit, Wis. The Sky Carp enter Sunday fifth in the Midwest League West and four games out of first place.
The Sky Carp scored nine runs in the fourth inning alone to win 17-5 over the Chiefs. Colby Shade and Cody Schrier each hit a pair of home runs. Marlins’ No. 3 prospect, Aiva Arquette knocked in a two-RBI triple for his only hit of the game.
Single-A
The Jupiter Hammerheads (23-15) send RHP Manuel Genao (1-1, 4.97) to the mound for his seventh start in the series finale against the St. Lucie Mets at 12:10 p.m. ET in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
The Hammerheads look to remain on top of the Florida State League East. They also look to rebound from a 7-6 loss on Saturday. Emilio Barreras recorded a season-high three hits while Abrahan Ramirez knocked a two-run homer to highlight the offense.
Rookie
The Marlins enter Monday’s game against the FCL Nationals 3-7 and in fifth place of the Florida Complex League East, 5.5 games behind first.
Marlins No. 20 prospect Luis Arana recorded his sixth multi-hit game of the season and Marlins No. 16 prospect Luis Cova extended his 10-game on-base streak with a double in a 5-3 loss against the FCL Astros on Saturday.
