After his heartbreaking hot dog FOMO went viral, Jonah the Cunucu heads to loanDepot park to throw the first pitch and champion local animal shelter donations.
There are very few sights in sports as heartbreaking as watching an adorably fluffy dog watch another dog enjoy the baseball delicacy that is a hot dog.
Millions of people saw the fear of missing out in the poor dog’s eyes on screens everywhere on social media. Such a video, clipped from the Marlins.TV broadcast, went viral to the point where news outlets both local covered the story with the same fervor as a political scandal.
A grave injustice was done to this poor pooch! And something needs to be done to right this wrong.
The Miami Marlins have answered the call and gone to work tracking down the identity of the dog and his family, and promising to make all of his dreams come true. Among the attempts was posting a “Wanted” poster of the sad dog on social media.
After a week’s worth of detective work, the Marlins identified the dog as Jonah, a 6-year-old Cunucu, and announced on Friday that “Jonah’s Dream Day” will be on Sunday, July 12, at loanDepot park.
Jonah’s owner, Peter Silvera, recently spoke with Inside Edition and said he was completely unaware of what was going on at the time.
“That was a crazy video. He’s just stared at it,” Silvera said. “It was funny, I was totally oblivious to that whole thing going on.”
Jonah will throw out the first pitch, and proceeds from each ticket sold will go to local animal shelters. How a dog will throw a first pitch will be a mystery worth finding out, but Silvera said that as long as Jonah’s out on the field will be enough of a joy.
“If he gets to like chasing a ball around the field, that would be cool. I don’t know what they’re planning,” said Silvera.

The Marlins enter Saturday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals 1.0 game back of the third National League Wild Card spot. Miami’s 43-39 record marks the club's most games over .500 since April 1, when the Marlins finished their season-opening homestand winning five of their first six games.
Ryan Gusto will make his first career start against the Cardinals on Saturday. He recorded a season-high six strikeouts in 4.1 innings against the San Francisco Giants on his previous start on June 21 in his last start on June 21. Gusto has a 6.00 ERA and has not pitched past the fifth inning this season.
