After winning four straight series to open June, Miami looked poised to keep rolling. Instead, the Marlins have been outscored 15-2 through two games in Philadelphia and now face a sweep as they try to regroup.
The City of Brotherly Love hasn’t shown much love to the Miami Marlins, who have struggled in their first two games of the season in Philadelphia.
Miami arrived in Philadelphia as one of, if not the, hottest teams in baseball, having won their first four series in June and in the process they only dropped two games. Sadly, for the Marlins, the momentum they built seemed to get left in South Florida.
After being shut out 7-0 in the series opener, Miami turned in another disappointing performance in Game 2, losing 8-2 as their struggles from Game 1 just carried over.
For the Marlins, the game was seemingly over by the end of the second inning, with the Phillies holding a 7-0 lead after putting three runs up in the first and another four in the second.
Tyler Phillips got the start against his former team, but the outing didn't go as he imagined.
Phillips lasted just four innings, giving up six hits and eight earned runs.
Phillips gave up three home runs in the game to Brandon Marsh, Alec Bohm and Kyle Schwarber.
Phillips' counterpart was also starting against his former team, but unlike Phillips, his outing was successful.
Jesus Luzardo was able to keep the Marlins' offense in check the entire night.
The Phillies acquired Luzardo in a trade with the Marlins in 2024; the former Marlin turned in a strong performance, going seven strong innings and not allowing a hit until the fifth inning.
Luzardo threw 106 pitches, 73 of them for strikes, while allowing five hits and two earned runs. He also recorded nine strikeouts while giving up just two walks.
The Marlins had an early opportunity to get on the board in the top of the first but were unable to get the run across the plate, leaving Xavier Edwards stranded on third.
Edwards drew a lead-off walk to start the game and advanced to third on a fielder's choice and a wild pitch.
Unlike the Marlins, the Phillies took advantage of their early opportunities. Marsh led off the bottom of the first with a walk and then stole second base. After Kyle Schwarber struck out,
Bryce Harper drew a walk, putting two runners on. Bohm hit a single to score Marsh, while Bryson Stott kept the scoring going with a triple, bringing home Harper and Bohm.
Heading into the second, the Phillies already held a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the second, the Phillies took down the Marlins in order. Javier Sanoja led off with a popout, followed by Leo Jimenez and Esteury Ruiz strikeouts.
The same can’t be said for the Marlins. Phillips was able to get Justin Crawford to ground out to start the inning. Edmundo Sosa would reach on a single and came home on Marsh's fourth straight game with a home run at Citizens Bank Park.
After a Schwarber walk and a Harper ground out, Bohm would leave the yard for the second time in the second inning, making it 7-0.
The Phillies would make it 8-0 in the fourth with a Schwarber solo shot.
The Marlins would finally get on the board in the seventh after a lead-off double by Jimenez; Ruiz would hit a home run to left field, making it 8-2, which is how it ended.
The Marlins will now look to avoid the sweep with Sandy Alcantara (6-4, 4.25 ERA) taking the mound. The Phillies will counter with Andrew Painter (1-7, 6.43 ERA)
