It was a bit shocking after the Miami Marlins didn't make a significant move at the trade deadline, specifically with a couple of starting pitchers in Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera.
Both were linked to multiple teams, including contenders, but nothing came to light and they finished out the year with the organization that took a chance on them.
The rumors didn't stop there; instead, they carried over into the offseason. As time went on, reports started to surface on Alcantara staying with the Marlins. The organization continues to have faith in the Cy Young winner, especially after his performance improved after the All-Star break, as he record 83.2 innings pitched, 67 hits allowed, 33 runs allowed, 10 home runs allowed, 71 strikeouts, with an ERA of 3.33, a 7-3 win-loss record, playing in 13 games.
It was a marvelous resurgence from the two-time All-Star, who underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the entire 2024 season. However, that safety didn't translate over to starting right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera.
The 27-year-old is coming off an outstanding season, playing in 26 games, with 137.2 innings pitched, 150 SOs, 121 hits allowed, 60 runs allowed, 17 HRs allowed, with an ERA of 3.53, a WAR of 2.8, and a 8-7 win-loss record. It was the first time the Dominican Republic native was able to display his talents without injuries derailing his trajectory.
It was also an opportunity for the Marlins to sell high on a well-respected starting pitcher with an injury history. Regardless, other organizations were attracted to Cabrera's potential, especially after the season he just had. The teams that were most notably interested were the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs. Both would need to provide a significant package to acquire Cabrera.
It was reported that the Cubs were "close" to finalizing a trade for the right-handed pitcher. As both sides continued to work on the final details, it was mentioned that Owen Caissie would be involved in the package. He appeared in 12 games last season, 26 at-bats, with five hits, four runs batted in, and one home run.
The Yankess and New York Mets were "never close" to getting a deal done.
As part of the Cabrera trade, the Marlins will also be acquiring a couple of more prospects, including infielder Cristian Heranandez and third baseman Edgardo DeLeon. It's finalized, writing a new chapter for the organization.
Caissie was the only top-100 prospect in the deal. It's going to be an interesting spring training as it's a month away.
