Major League hit leader Otto Lopez and slugger Liam Hicks bring their elite bats across the border as Miami’s surging Canadian core faces a high-stakes homecoming in Toronto.

Is it any surprise that three of the Miami Marlins’ best hitters are Canadian?

Probably, but it fits with the Marlins’ upcoming road series against the Toronto Blue Jays, starting Monday. Miami features three players who participated in the 2026 World Baseball Classic with Team Canada in C/1B Liam Hicks, SS Otto Lopez, and OF Owen Caissie.

Hicks, in his second season in the Major Leagues, ranks third in MLB with 44 RBI, and leads with 15 multi-RBI games this season. He has 11 home runs after a two-homer night on Saturday, which leads the Marlins and is third among big league catchers.

After a couple of years as an adequate bat, Lopez has broken out to become the MLB leader in hits (70), and batting average (.337). He has been exceptional in May, slashing .356/.372/.467 in 23 games during the month.

Caissie had a hot start to the season but struggled throughout April and early May. However, since May 13, he has batted .269 with two home runs and seven RBI. His 24 RBI is second on the Marlins behind Hicks.

Junk or Gem?

The Marlins turn to RHP Janson Junk for his 11th start of the season. Junk is coming off back-to-back losses, including his worst of the season on May 20 against the Atlanta Braves. He gave up eight runs on eight hits in five innings in a 9-1 loss.

Junk has a 5.01 ERA in 13 career starts against the American League, which includes a short stint with the Los Angeles Angels. He is also 1-2 with a 5.94 ERA in three road starts this season. A solid start turns both trends around.

Fish Bites

The Marlins allowed Trevor Phillips to pitch as a starting pitcher after spending much of the season in the bullpen. He went 3.2 innings to combine with a bullpen that held the Mets scoreless on Sunday. The Marlins' bullpen leads MLB in opponents' batting average (.192) and has issued the second-fewest hits behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Marlins lead MLB with 62 stolen bases this season, led by Jakob Marsee (13 SB), and with Esteury Ruiz and Lopez tied for eight swiped bags each. The Marlins also steal third base more than anyone else in the big leagues (16), making them one of the most dangerous teams on the base paths.

Prospect watch

Miami’s No. 19 prospect Fenwick Trimble leads Double-A Pensacola with 43 hits on the year. Only Kemp Alderman (Triple-A) has more hits in the Marlins farm system.

Miami’s No. 10 prospect Dillon Lewis leads Double-A Pensacola with 28 RBI this season, which also ranks third across the Marlins’ Minor League system.

Miami’s No. 20 prospect Luis Arana entered Monday leading the FCL Marlins with a .400 batting average in 45 at-bats and leads the Florida Complex League with 14 stolen bases.
