Deyvison De Los Santos starts and the Miami Marlins look to sweep the Washington Nationals.
LOANDEPOT PARK – Coming off a 4-2 series-clinching win on Saturday, in which Herbierto Hernandez and Jakobe Marsee both hit solo homers, the Miami Marlins look to sweep the Washington Nationals on Sunday.
The National League Wild Card race remains tight, with 32 games left in the regular season. A sweep would be critical for momentum ahead of a three-game home series against the Boston Red Sox.
Pitching Matchup
The Marlins will start Janson Junk on the mound on Sunday. He’s produced a 4-37 ERA and a 6-8 record in 92.2 innings (18 starts). Junk looks to bounce back from a difficult start against the Philadelphia Phillies. In five innings, he allowed eight hits and two earned runs. However, the Marlins’ offense couldn’t produce consistent offense until the last three innings, but it was too late to complete a comeback.
Junk relies on six pitches:
- Four Seamer (35.6 percent)
- Slider (20.8 percent)
- Changeup (17.9 percent)
- Sweeper (13.8 percent)
- Curveball (7.7 percent)
- Sinker (four percent)
Junk has an above-average bases-on-balls rate (79th percentile); he’s walked at least one batter in 14 starts. In this series, only six National batters have been walked in 65 at-bats.
Meanwhile, the Nationals are starting Jackson Kent. The major league rookie was called up on Aug. 12 and debuted the same day against the Chicago Cubs. In two starts, Kent has produced a 9.39 ERA and a 0-1 record in 7.2 innings.
The 23-year-old spent the majority of the season playing Triple-A with the Rochester Red Wings. He produced a 4.38 ERA and an 8-3 record in 63.2 innings (13 starts).
Kent has shown four pitches:
- Four Seamer (45.7 percent)
- Slider (24.1 percent)
- Changeup (21 percent)
- Curveball (9.3 percent)
Game Notes
Ahead of the game, the Marlins announced the call-up of right-handed pitcher Jack Ralston. He's produced a 1.66 ERA and a 6-2 record in 59.2 innings (39 games). Meanwhile, left-handed pitcher John King was designated for assignment. He signed a one-year, $1.5 million coontract as a free agent last offseason. King produced a 3.99 ERA and a 6-2 record in 49.2 innings (50 games).
Deyvison De Los Santos (batting seventh) will start at first base less than 24 hours after being called up. He last played in the majors earlier this season, April 4, against the Atlanta Braves. Griffin Conine (batting eighth) will start in right field and Brian Navarreto (batting ninth) will be behind the plate. It’s likely a protocol to keep Joe Mack’s sore right shoulder, which sidelined him for three games, from lingering.
