The Miami Marlins look to even out the series against the Boston Red Sox.
LOANDEPOT PARK – After a back-and-forth 4-2 loss on Monday, the Miami Marlins look to bounce back against the Boston Red Sox, with playoff hopes still alive but on the line.
14 base runners were left stranded and reliever Pete Fairbanks couldn’t close the game. He exited early with nerve irritation. Sandy Alcantara delivered another excellent start, but the bullpen couldn’t contain the Red Sox’s lineup.
Pitching Matchup
The Marlins will start Tyler Phillips on the mound. He came from the bullpen in his last appearance against the Philadelphia Phillies last Tuesday. Phillips has started in 14 games on the season. He’s produced a 3.67 ERA and a 3-6 record in 100.2 innings (31 total games). Phillips relies on six pitches:
- Sinker (25.5 percent)
- Sweeper (24.7 percent)
- Split Finger (23.4 percent)
- Curveball (16.6 percent)
- Four Seamer (8.5 percent)
- Slider (1.3 percent)
Meanwhile, the Red Sox are starting Payton Tolle. The second-year major leaguer is having a breakout season. Tolle has produced a 3.08 ERA and an 8-6 record in 120 innings (21 starts). He relies on five pitches:
- Four Seamer (45.8 percent)
- Sinker (21.9 percent)
- Cutter (19.9 percent)
- Curveball (9.2 percent)
- Changeup (3.2 percent)
Tolle is well above-average in nearly every advanced statistical category: pitching run value (84th percentile), fastball run value (85th percentile), chase rate (93rd percentile), strikeout rate (84th percentile), and whiff rate (65th percentile).
Game Notes
The Marlins announced ahead of Tuesday’s game that reliever Pete Fairbanks (right median nerve irritation) has been placed on the 15-day injured list. He asked to be pulled from Monday’s game after throwing five pitches.
In the lineup, Leo Jimenez (batting sixth) will start at first base, Esteury Ruiz (batting eighth) will start at center field, and Brian Navarreto (batting ninth) will operate behind the plate. The Marlins have Kyle Stowers, Jakob Marsee, and Joe Mack on the bench.
Red Sox All-Star and left fielder Jarren Duran, coming off an impactful performance, will bat seventh. He had two hits in four at-bats and scored a run.
