The Miami Marlins announce a roster move ahead of series finale against Boston Red Sox.
MIAMI, Fla. – Coming off a 7-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox in 11 innings, in which left fielder and All-Star Jarren Duran hit a go-ahead grand slam, the Miami Marlins look to avoid a sweep and return to the win column ahead of a seven-game road trip.
With the game tied at 3-3, reliever Cade Gibson took the mound from the bullpen. After loading the bases, he threw an 80.4-mile sweeper low in the strike zone; Duran didn’t hesitate to swing and went 412 feet deep.
With 29 games left on the regular-season schedule, the Marlins’ playoff hopes are increasingly flatlining.
Pitching Matchup
Ryan Gusto will start on the mound. He’s produced a 4.37 ERA and a 0-3 record in 57.2 innings (17 games). Gusto hasn’t reached five innings in his previous three starts. In those appearances, he allowed 14 hits, six runs (four earned), three home runs, two bases on balls, and struck out 12 batters.
Gusto relies on seven pitches:
- Four Seamer (28 percent)
- Changeup (15.2 percent)
- Sweeper (13.4 percent)
- Cutter (13 percent)
- Sinker (12.8 percent)
- Slider (10.7 percent)
- Curveball (6.8 percent)
Meanwhile, the Red Sox are starting three-time All-Star Sonny Gray. He’s produced a 2.79 ERA and leads all major leaguers with 16 wins. Gray relies on six pitches:
- Sinker (21.2 percent)
- Sweeper (20 percent)
- Cutter (19.3 percent)
- Four Seamer (17.6 percent)
- Curveball (16.6 percent)
- Changeup (5.2 percent)
Game Notes
Ahead of the series finale, the Marlins announced that Gibson, who gave up Tuesday’s grand slam, was optioned to Triple-A, promoting Patrick Monteverde. He’s produced a 5.84 ERA and a 3-2 record in 91 innings (25 games).
In the lineup, Kyle Stowers will leadoff as a designated hitter. It will be the 28-year-old’s third game back since coming off the injured list. Griffin Conine (batting second) will start at first base and Own Caissie (batting seventh) at right field. Joe Mack (batting eighth) returns to operate behind the plate.
Duran remains in the seventh spot of the Red Sox’s lineup. He’s up to three hits in nine at-bats in the series, including the grand slam, and four runs batted in.
