Marlins lose Xavier Edwards to thumb sprain, recall Jared Serna amid playoff push.
The Miami Marlins wrap up a four-game series Monday at 6:45 p.m. ET against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park, with a chance to split the series after losing the first two games.
Prior to first pitch, the Marlins made four roster moves, the most notable being the placement of second baseman Xavier Edwards on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left thumb.
It is the first time this season that Edwards has landed on the injured list after slashing .282/.361/.376 in 137 games.
The injury occurred in the fifth inning Sunday, when the Marlins scored six runs in the ninth inning to complete a dramatic comeback and win 6-2.
Edwards was covering second base and trying to put the tag on Nationals runner Jorbit Vivas during a steal attempt.
Vivas’ headfirst slide appeared to catch Edwards’ glove arm, and he immediately grabbed at his left hand and arm.
A few minutes later, Edwards left the game with a member of the Marlins’ medical staff and manager Clayton McCullough.
The Marlins recalled infielder Jared Serna from Triple-A Jacksonville as the corresponding move.
Serna, 24, was one of three players acquired in the trade that sent Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the New York Yankees in 2024.
Serna has slashed .221/.303/.378 with 12 home runs and 14 stolen bases in Triple-A this season.
Miami also added to its bullpen, recalling left-hander Cade Gibson after he was optioned to Triple-A on Aug. 26 during the team’s series against the Boston Red Sox.
Gibson has struggled this season, posting a 5.87 ERA and allowing 19 walks in 38 1/3 innings.
He joins Dax Fulton as the only left-handers in Miami’s bullpen, with Andrew Nardi out for the season and possibly next season as well.
Miami also optioned right-hander Wikelman González back to Triple-A after a brief call-up.
The 24-year-old has not pitched in a game this season for the Marlins.
Miami did gain some ground in the Wild Card standings, with the team now trailing the final spot by 3 1/2 games with 25 games remaining entering Monday’s action.
With the postseason race tightening, Monday’s series finale carries added importance for Miami.
The Marlins will look to avoid dropping three of four to Washington while continuing to chip away at the deficit in the Wild Card race.
Every game becomes increasingly important with less than a month remaining in the regular season.
