As the former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara regains his elite form, his commitment to Miami’s surging postseason push challenges trade deadline speculation and signals a franchise-altering stand.
The Miami Marlins are heading into a tough stretch of the trade deadline, and things are only getting trickier for them involving Sandy Alcantara.
With August 3 approaching and the Marlins suddenly pushing toward postseason contention, Alcantara made it clear Saturday that his focus remains firmly on winning games in Miami, not speculation about his future.
“My mind is [on] keep winning the game with my boys in there,” Alcantara said after another dominant outing against the Athletics. “We’ve been doing so great this year. But if they made any decision, I’m just a player and I need to follow those decisions. But to me, it’s great to stay in Miami.”
His comments came recently after Alcantara delivered arguably his best performance of the season in Miami’s 7-2 victory over Oakland at Sutter Health Park.
The former Cy Young winner threw eight innings of one-run baseball while striking out a season-high eight batters. He also induced 11 ground-ball outs and needed just 100 pitches to complete the outing, continuing a stretch that has completely reshaped his season.
Alcantara Is Getting Back Into His Usual Self
After struggling earlier in the year, Alcantara is entering the discussions as one of baseball’s most dominant starters.
The 30-year-old extended his personal win streak to seven games and improved to 10 wins on the season. Over that span, he owns a 2.98 ERA while lowering his overall ERA from 4.66 to 4.00.
More importantly, Miami keeps winning behind him.
The Marlins improved to 48-42 with Saturday’s victory, matching their best mark of the season at six games above .500 while remaining firmly in the National League Wild Card race. Suddenly, a team many expected to sell at the deadline is becoming one of the hottest clubs in baseball.
That shift has dramatically changed the conversation surrounding Alcantara.
For months, rival executives viewed him as one of the most attractive trade candidates in the league due to his frontline ability, durability, and team-friendly contract. But Miami’s recent surge has complicated that idea.
Rather than looking like a rebuilding club, the Marlins now resemble a dangerous postseason contender built around elite starting pitching.
Max Meyer has emerged alongside Alcantara, Eury Perez is regaining form, and the offense has started producing consistently behind players like Kyle Stowers and Otto Lopez.
Marlins owner Bruce Sherman only added more fuel to the idea that Miami wants to keep its ace long term.
“He’s our franchise icon,” Sherman said before Friday’s game. “I look forward to many years in the future and what this all becomes.”
For now, Alcantara has made his intentions clear on staying in Miami, and the Marlins have every reason to keep him there.
