Undefeated ace Max Meyer takes the hill in Washington as surging hitters Otto Lopez and Heriberto Hernández lead Miami’s high-speed quest to finalize a dominant away-series takeover.
The Miami Marlins enter Wednesday’s matinee against the Washington Nationals seeking their first road series sweep of the season.
The Marlins turn to their best pitcher, RHP Max Meyer. Set to make his 13th start of the season, Meyer (5-0) remains the only starting pitcher in Major League Baseball without a loss this season.
That streak almost snapped on May 29 against the New York Mets, when he allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits and three walks, with six strikeouts in six innings. He was bailed out on an Owen Caissie game-tying home run, but the Marlins still lost 9-7 in extra innings.
Meyer has a 4.78 ERA with 31 strikeouts through five road starts this season. Meyer leads the Marlins with 74 strikeouts through 12 starts this season. He will bat second in the lineup.
Fish Bites
After going 2-for-5 with a home run on Tuesday, Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez leads MLB in hits with 80. He continues to lead the big leagues in batting average with .335 on the season.
Coming off a two-home run performance on Tuesday, the Marlins will bat Heriberto Hernández lead off against the Nationals on Wednesday. Since being called up from Triple-A Jacksonville, Hernandez is batting .343 with a 1.104 OPS, five home runs, and 14 RBI.
The Marlins lead the big leagues with 70 stolen bases this season, sporting three players with double-digit swiped bags. 2B Xavier Edwards has stolen 10 bases for the third straight season. Centerfielder Jakob Marsee leads the Marlins in stolen bases with 14, which is tied for third in the National League.
Prospect Watch
Triple-A Jacksonville (33-25) defeated Nashville 6-2 on Tuesday and will send Braxton Garrett (0-2, 2.55) on the mound for Wednesday. Given the many injuries plaguing the Marlins starting rotation, his starts are worth keeping an eye on, in case he earns a second chance this season.
No. 7 prospect Cam Cannarella made his Double-A debut and knocked in a single in the bottom of the seventh inning in the Pensacola Blue Wahoos’ 5-4 win over Chattanooga on Tuesday. No. 19 prospect Fenwick Trimble (55) continues to lead Marlins minor leaguers in hits. No. 3 prospect Aiva Arquette hit a three-run home run to push Pensacola (27-25) to victory.
No. 12 prospect Brandon Compton provided all the offense with an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning of High-A Beloit’s (24-27) 11-1 loss against Peoria on Tuesday.
No. 20 prospect Luis Arana made his Single-A debut, recording his first hit and first stolen base. The Jupiter Hammerheads (29-23) defeated Bradenton 6-4 on Tuesday, led by a two-run homer by Abraham Ramirez. The Hammerheads are in first place in the Florida State League East.
The FCL Marlins (9-11) defeated the FCL Cardinals 13-1 on Tuesday after Juan Alva and John Cruz each hit a home run. The two teams face off again on Wednesday.
