Lake Bachar makes his first career start as Miami leans on a fresh relief corps and tactical roster moves to clinch a crucial divisional series victory.

One day after Sandy Alcantara gave the bullpen some rest, the Miami Marlins are going with a bullpen day against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.

The Marlins will start with Lake Bachar, who has made multiple appearances involving more than one inning this season. It will be his first start and 19th appearance of the season. In his previous 18 appearances, Bachar posted a 3.77 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP, and a .184 opponent’s batting average through 28 innings.

His last appearance didn’t go well for Bachar, who gave up two home runs for three runs in a 6-1 Marlins loss against the New York Mets on Saturday. Bachar threw a hitless inning with two strikeouts against the Nationals on May 9 in Miami.

To provide reinforcements, the Marlins recalled RHP Ryan Gusto from Triple-A Jacksonville and optioned RHP Zach Brzykcy one day after calling him up but not using him out of the bullpen. Gusto was previously a starting pitcher for the Marlins last year after being traded from the Houston Astros for Jesus Sanchez.
