The Marlins officially have a new voice leading their hitting department, replacing Pedro Guerrero.
MIAMI — The Miami Marlins have hired Dillon Lawson as their new hitting coach Monday, bringing a fresh voice and a modern approach to an offense looking to establish greater consistency at the plate.
The move represents another important step for the organization as it continues building a competitive roster and developing its young position players.
Lawson takes over for Pedro Guerrero, who was relieved of his duties at the end of the 2026 season.
As reported by Christina De Nicola, Lawson, 41, "joined the organization on July 1 as a roving hitting coach and will work in tandem with Major League assistant hitting coaches Chris Hess and Corbin Day."
Under Guerrero in 2026, the Marlins ranked seventh in batting average (.249) and hit 168 home runs as a club.
Lawson will now get an opportunity to work with Griffin Conine, Otto Lopez, Xavier Edwards, Kyle Stowers and others.
Lawson arrives in Miami with experience working across different levels of professional baseball, including a prominent stint with the New York Yankees, while most recently serving as the Boston Red Sox’s major league assistant hitting coach.
He served as the Yankees' hitting coach during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, becoming known for his emphasis on swing decisions, plate discipline, and helping hitters maximize their offensive potential.
His time in New York offered valuable lessons about the challenges of coaching hitters in a high-pressure environment.
Although the Yankees moved in a different direction after the 2023 season, Lawson remained a recognizable figure in baseball's ongoing conversation about offensive development and the role of analytics in hitting instruction.
For Miami, the hiring signals a continued commitment to building a more productive lineup through player development and modern hitting strategies.
Lawson's experience with established major league hitters could prove valuable as the Marlins look to help their younger players refine their approaches and become more consistent offensive contributors.
His work will likely focus on improving pitch recognition, making better swing decisions and identifying ways for hitters to capitalize on mistakes in the strike zone.
Manager Clayton McCullough hopes Lawson can play a key role in helping the Marlins return to the playoffs for the first time since 2023.
With a young core in place and new faces soon to arrive, Miami will look to Lawson to help unlock the lineup’s potential and establish a more consistent offensive identity. His impact will ultimately be measured by the team’s consistency and results throughout the season.
