Ryan Gusto takes the mound as the Miami Marlins fight for Wild Card positioning, eyeing a crucial series victory against Mike Trout and the Angels to regain winning momentum.
MIAMI, Fla. – After snapping a four-game win streak and ace Sandy Alcantara making franchise history on Saturday, the Miami Marlins are looking to establish some late-season momentum.
The race for the last National League Wild Card spot is tight, as six teams, including the Marlins, are within five games of the Philadelphia Phillies. There are 44 games left on the regular-season schedule, all carrying significant value for the standing positions. The Marlins prepare to face the Los Angeles Angels for a final time in a rubber match on Sunday.
Probable Pitchers
The Marlins list righty Ryan Gusto as the probable pitcher. He’s produced a 4.80 ERA and a 0-3 record in 45 innings (14 games and nine starts). Gusto has split stints with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Triple-A) and the active roster this season. He was most recently recalled on July 9 and produced a 3.92 ERA in 20.2 innings (six games and three starts).
Gusto relies on seven pitches:
Four-seamer (28.2 percent)
Changeup (16.9 percent)
Cutter (13.9 percent)
Sinker (12.9 percent)
Sweeper (12.4 percent)
Slider (9.6 percent)
Curveball (6.2 percent)
The Angels list Grayson Rodriguez as the probable pitcher. He’s produced a 7.24 ERA and a 3-4 record in 51 innings (11 starts). After missing all of last season, battling through several injuries, the 26-year-old has found a way back to a major league mound.
Rodriguez relies on four pitches:
Four-seamer (53.4 percent)
Changeup (23.5 percent)
Curveball (12.2 percent)
Slider (10.9 percent)
Game Notes
All-Star Otto Lopez and Xavier Edwards each had strong performances against the Angels on Saturday. They combined for four hits in seven at-bats, plus five runs batted in. Both middle infielders struggled in the last four games. Building consistent momentum will impact the team’s success moving forward.
12-time All-Star Mike Trout was hitless in three at-bats, including a strikeout, on Saturday. He’s key to establishing offensive momentum in the Angels’ lineup. Gusto’s ability to win each matchup early will be critical for the Marlins’ chances of clinching the series.
Manager Clayton McCullough could maximize the bullpen by having Monday off.
The Marlins haven’t won a series since last weekend against the New York Mets. Accomplishing such on Sunday would be a step in the right direction, plus returning to over .500.
How to Watch
The game will be televised on Marlins.TV and ABTV. First pitch is scheduled for 1:40 p.m. E.T. at LoanDepot Park.
