Ace Sandy Alcantara takes the mound to snap a four-game skid after a heartbreaking play at the plate stifled the Miami Marlins' comeback hopes against the Los Angeles Angels.

MIAMI, Fla. – Another Miami Marlins late comeback effort fell short in Friday’s loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

Facing a one-run deficit, Leo Jimenez was at second, and Javier Sanoja knocked a slider into play. The baseball went over Denzer Guzman’s glove and fairly rolled to left foul territory. Marlins third base coach Blake Lalli waived Jimenez home, but Jose Siri threw the ball to Tyler Heineman in time at home plate for the game-winning tag.

The Marlins (58-59) look to snap a four-game losing streak on Saturday against the Angels (45-71). They are four games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the last National League Wild Card spot. It’s a must-win situation the rest of the season.

Probable Pitchers

Former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara is listed as the Marlins’ probable pitcher. He’s produced a 3.68 ERA and a 12-6 record. He leads the league with 156.2 innings pitched and 649 batters faced. The 30-year-old ace gives the team the best chance of getting back in the win column.

Game Notes

The Marlins’ offense has been inconsistent in this four-game losing streak. On Friday, 13 batters were left on base. The Angels finished with six hits to the Marlins 12, but clearly one clubhouse took more advantage than the other.

All-Star Otto Lopez and Xavier Edwards were hitless in nine combined at-bats. Meanwhile, Kyle Stowers, Agustin Ramirez, and Jakob Marsee combined for a perfect eight-for-eight.

Friday was the first time the Marlins led in a game since Aug. 2 against the New York Mets. Alcantara is more than capable of putting batters away, but the offense needs to pick him up.

How to Watch

Saturday’s game is televised on Marlins.TV and ABTV. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. E.T.
