A hamstring tear sidelines a promising hitter, while a power-hitting prospect gets a fresh chance with the Marlins.

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins have placed outfielder Griffin Conine on the 10-day injured list on Friday leading up to a three-game series at Detroit.

Conine suffered a left hamstring tear diving for a line drive to left field during Thursday’s 8-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds. He left the game with what was initially considered discomfort.

Conine was batting .273 in 22 at-bats this season before the injury. He hit a solo home run during Wednesday’s victory over the Reds.

“Griff has impact potential in his bat,” Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said after the game. “When he squares it up, he does, he has the ability to do some damage.”

In 183 career at-bats dating back to his MLB debut on Aug. 26, 2024, he has batted .262 with a.779 OPS, seven home runs and 24 RBI. Early season injuries have plagued the potential of the son of Marlins legend Jeff Conine. Last April, Conine, who was slashing .281/.352/.438 through 20 games at the time, suffered a left shoulder injury and didn’t return to the field until Sept. 23, 2025.

“I need to stay on the field more.” Conine said. “I’ve proven that I’m gonna be good out there.”

Conine has been used in more platoon situations against right-handed pitching, along with Owen Cassie and Liam Hicks, a group he calls “The Lefty Squad.” It is a group that stays ready even on games involving starting southpaws, knowing they could eventually be called in a pinch against a bullpen righty.

“We probably swing more on days we’re not starting,” Conine said. “It’s easier when you’re starting. I have not been as good coming off the bench yet. That’s definitely harder to do.”

In a corresponding move, the Marlins on Friday recalled first-base prospect Deyvison De Los Santos from Triple-A Jacksonville. De Los Santos made his MLB debut on March 29 and hit a double for his first big-league hit.

The 22-year-old slugger hit three home runs with an .891 OPS in eight games with the Jumbo Shrimp, helping the defending national champions go on a five-game winning streak.

De Los Santos came to the Marlins in a 2024 midseason trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks for relief pitcher AJ Puk. That year, he hit 40 home runs and 120 RBI in the minor leagues.

“The power potential, the impact, we know that’s certainly something that we’re intrigued by acquiring De Los Santos,” McCullough said on March 28. “Him refining his at-bat quality, his approach offensively will probably be the determining factor of how much of that power he gets to in the major-league level.”
