Miami Marlins prospect Jakob Marsee delivered a clutch two-run single to help Team Italy defeat Mexico 9-1 and advance to the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals.

The Miami Marlins continue to see their young talent shine on the international stage, and outfielder Jakob Marsee delivered one of the key moments in Team Italy’s stunning 9-1 victory over Mexico on Wednesday in the World Baseball Classic.

Italy entered the matchup as a clear underdog against a Mexico roster loaded with MLB talent, but timely hitting and aggressive play allowed them to pull off one of the tournament’s most impressive wins. Marsee played a pivotal role in breaking the game open.

In the top of the fifth inning, Italy held a modest 3-0 lead and had an opportunity to add insurance. With runners on base, Marsee stepped to the plate and delivered a clutch two-run RBI single that extended the lead to 5-0. The hit effectively shifted momentum in Italy’s favor and quieted the Mexican lineup, which struggled to recover the rest of the night.

While Vinny Pasquantino grabbed the spotlight with a three-homer performance, Marsee’s contribution proved just as important in creating separation on the scoreboard.

The 24-year-old outfielder has been building momentum throughout the month of March. His overall World Baseball Classic numbers have not been eye-popping—he entered the game hitting .188 with a .350 on-base percentage and .600 slugging percentage—but his ability to deliver in a key moment highlighted the value he brings to Italy’s lineup.

Marsee has looked far more dominant in Spring Training with the Marlins organization. In limited action this spring, he has posted an impressive .444/.615/1.504 slash line with a home run, four hits, four runs scored, and a stolen base in just nine at-bats.

The performance against Mexico could serve as the spark Marsee needs to heat up during the tournament’s most important stretch.

Former Marlins infielder Jon Berti also contributed to the victory, launching a solo home run in the fourth inning that helped give Italy early breathing room.

The victory propels Italy to the quarterfinals, where they will meet Puerto Rico in Houston. Italy's next opponent will be Puerto Rico. If Marsee continues to deliver hits at the right time, Italy may demonstrate that they are capable of pulling off another shock on the most important stage of the competition.
