Miami’s surging lineup regains its leading power threat as the slugger returns for a crucial Denver series, bolstering the club's push for a National League Wild Card spot.

Seeking to close out June with their 20th win of the month, the Miami Marlins are reinstating catcher Liam Hicks from the 15-day injured list on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s game against the Colorado Rockies in Denver was the first day Hicks was eligible to come off the IL.

Hicks leads the Marlins with 13 homers and 53 RBIs, spending most of the season penciled in as the designated hitter with some games split between catcher and first base. He was scratched from Miami’s June 20 game with a lower back strain and later placed on the injured list.

In a corresponding move, the Marlins sent third baseman Graham Pauley back to Triple-A Jacksonville after he drove in two RBIs in two games during last weekend’s series against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Marlins (45-40) enter Tuesday tied with the Cardinals for the third National League Wild Card spot after beginning June eight games under .500 after being swept in New York against the Mets. Their 19-6 record this month leads Major League Baseball.

The Marlins’ 45 wins are the third most in franchise history through 85 games to start a season. The only two teams with better records up to that point are the two teams that went on to win the World Series, 1997 (50-35) and 2003 (48-37).

The Marlins reached this point by improving their fortunes on the road. Miami has won nine of its last 13 road games since the start of the month, averaging 5.1 runs and 9.1 hits per game. The Fightin’ Fish were one of 10 MLB clubs with a winning record on the road, with a 41-40 mark last season.

Eury Pérez will take the mound for the Marlins. He previously made his first start since returning from the IL on June 24 against the Texas Rangers. He allowed only one run on three hits with a strikeout over 4.2 innings in a 4-2 win. It was his third consecutive start without allowing a walk.
