Sandy Alcantara has spent most of his career carrying the Marlins from the pitcher’s mound every fifth day. On Wednesday, he found himself in a completely different role.
Sandy Alcantara has built his reputation and earned respect by pitching deep into games, throwing pitch after pitch and giving the Miami Marlins every opportunity to win every fifth day he takes the mound.
On Wednesday, in the series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks, he was asked to do something completely different by manager Clayton McCullough.
With Miami holding a 4-3 lead, Alcantara emerged from the bullpen for the ninth inning and took the mound looking to protect a one-run advantage. Just two days earlier, he had thrown 101 pitches against the same team.
This time, he needed only three outs. Alcantara opened the inning by getting two quick flyouts. After allowing a walk to Lars Nootbaar, Arizona had its potential tying run aboard. Jordan Lawlar entered as a pinch-runner and tried to steal second, but Joe Mack's throw found him before he could get there.
Just like that, the game was over, and Alcantara had picked up his first major league save
The moment was unusual, but perhaps that is what made it so fitting for Alcantara's 2026 season. He has continued to show the durability and versatility that has made him one of the defining players in Marlins history.
Entering the night, Alcantara led the majors with 206 innings. He had also reached 13 wins and continued adding to a season filled with personal and franchise milestones.
Now, he has a save on his long resume. The accomplishment also carried a larger meaning for Miami.
With the Marlins' bullpen dealing with heavy workloads, Alcantara had made it known that he was willing to help in whatever role the team needed. When his number was called, the ace delivered.
Unfortunately, it looks like the Marlins will miss the playoffs for the second consecutive season under McCullough, but perhaps this is something the coaching staff can factor into its plans for 2027.
Wednesday was another example of Alcantara’s willingness to put the team ahead of everything else.
The celebration afterward showed just how much the moment meant to his teammates. Miami players sent their veteran ace into a laundry-cart celebration, turning a career first into a clubhouse memory.
Alcantara has already accomplished plenty in a Marlins uniform.
2026 has given him another kind of season — one filled with milestones and moments that continue to add to his legacy.
