Miami’s dominant June surge continues as a historic eight-game home surge and Otto Lopez’s explosive bat propel the club into the thick of the Wild Card race.
The Miami Marlins (40-38) are the hottest MLB team after sweeping the San Francisco Giants (31-46) on Sunday to set a new winning streak record at loanDepot Park.
Miami is on an eight-game home winning streak, and it's part of their league-best 14-4 record in June. Their performance throughout the month has launched them over .500 for the first time since April 11, and they are now half a game out of the Wild Card.
The Marlins are a dominant home team, tying the Los Angeles Dodgers (49-29) with their 26th home win of the season. The eight-game stretch started against the Tampa Bay Rays (43-31) after winning the second game of the series.
From there on, the club won the series 2-1 and swept the Arizona Diamondbacks (39-38). At the forefront of the team's success has been their hot bats led by MLB batting average and hits leader Otto Lopez.
Lopez has recorded 14 hits across the eight home games, keeping his average at .332. He has also recorded five RBI during the stretch.
He has fueled the Marlins' explosive offense, as the team scored four or more runs in six of their eight home games. Miami has recorded 8.25 hits per game during its hot June run.
The Marlins' offense and pitching helped secure two close victories against the Giants in Games 1 and 3. At the bottom of the seventh inning in the first outing, catcher Liam Hicks singled down right field to send right fielder Esteury Ruiz to home plate and put Miami up one (3-2).
Right fielder Owen Caissie then hit a sacrifice fly ball, which sent third baseman Javier Sanoja to rack up another point on the scoreboard. Right-handed relief pitcher Pete Fairbanks entered the game in the ninth inning to close it out and secure the Marlins' sixth-straight home win.
Left fielder Kyle Stowers kicked off Game 3 with a home run in the first inning to put the first points on the board. Then, at the bottom of the fourth, the MLB's best hitter stepped to the plate.
Lopez doubled to center field, bringing Stowers home for the second score and putting the Marlins back up one (2-1). Right-handed relief pitcher Lake Bachar closed the match out for the Marlins in the ninth inning, forcing shortstop Willy Adames into a groundout double play.
Miami has an opportunity to extend its eight-game home winning streak to 11 on Monday against the Texas Rangers (37-40), starting at 6:40 p.m.
