Riding a dominant scoreless streak, phenom Eury Pérez takes the mound to halt Miami’s ten-game slide as the Marlins look to regain their home-field magic against San Diego.
MIAMI — Facing a 10-game losing streak, the Miami Marlins turn to Eury Pérez to right the ship against the San Diego Padres on Saturday.
Pérez, who is making his 18th start of the season, is coming off a six-inning shutout performance, including a season-high nine strikeouts. That start was spoiled in the ninth inning, as the Milwaukee Brewers won on a walk-off home run last week. Perez has allowed two runs or fewer in seven straight starts since May 22. During that stretch, Perez has posted a 1.14 ERA with 46 strikeouts over 39.1 innings.
Pérez has a 2.88 ERA against the National League, a 3.40 ERA vs. the NL West specifically. Through 25 career starts at loanDepot park, Perez is 9-8 with a 2.69 ERA and 153 strikeouts over 133.2 innings.
Perez was solid in his lone start against the Padres on July 21, 2025. He allowed only two runs on five hits with five strikeouts, but the Marlins still lost 2-1.
Draft spotlight
With their 12th-round draft pick, the Marlins took a chance on high school pitcher Bane Barker from Jacksonville. The expectation is his 6-8 frame can lead to him growing into being a diamond-in-the-rough type pitching prospect.
Barker said he was 6 feet tall while in middle school, and as he grew during his time at Sandalwood HS, so did his prowess.
“Junior and senior year, I started taking it seriously in the weight room,” Barker said, “and that’s what really got me drafted.”
Most high school players are successful at both the mound and at the plate, but end up having to choose between the two to specialize in. Barker was a solid prep hitter but is sticking with pitching because his height helps him “create a strong angle.”
“That’s why I picked pitching over the hitting aspect of the game,” Barker said.
Barker was originally committed to go the junior college route at Gulf Coast before getting drafted by the Marlins.
Fish Bites
Marlins rookie catcher Joe Mack has 10 home runs through his first 60 games as a Major Leaguer. He’s the sixth Marlins rookie to accomplish that feat, recently joining previous catchers Agustín Ramírez (2025) and Nick Fortes (2021-22).
The Marlins have a 17-5 record in home day games this season, which is tied with the Chicago Cubs for the most in MLB. While the 10-game losing streak started with two of the three games at home during the day, it may be what finally snaps the skid.
The Marlins are tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks in triples (24) and are second behind only the Washington Nationals with 109 stolen bases so far this season. The Marlins are the first team in MLB to have four players with at least 15 swiped bags, with Esteury Ruiz leading the team with 22.
