Jakob Marsee’s tenth-inning heroics fueled a thrilling comeback in Miami, moving the surging Fish within three games of the division lead while securing a historic postseason pace.
MIAMI — It took three and a half months, but Jakob Marsee finally had his moment of the season.
Marsee squared up on a 90 mph cutter in the middle of the strike zone and hit the longest single of his career, leading to a 6-5 Miami Marlins win over the Seattle Marunners in extra innings on Tuesday. It was the Marlins’ fourth walk-off win of the season.
“We know Marsee has incredible potential,” said Marlins outfielder Heriberto Hernandez after the game. “He was going to be able to close this [game].”
With the win, the Marlins (50-42) earned their 50th win of the season and are not only in position for the wild card but also three games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East Division.
This was the fourth time in the Marlins’ 33-year history that they reached 50 wins in their first 92 games of the year. The previous three all resulted in postseason appearances.
“We’re on the same page. There’s no ego,” Hernandez said. “We just want to win some games and just do the best.”
The Marlins tied the game 5-5 in the eighth inning on a solo home run by Hernandez, who came in as a pinch hitter. Hernandez came in off the bench to lead off the bottom half of the inning and brought new energy to the team with his third pinch-hit home run of the season.
“My mentality is to play,” Hernandez said. “Once I get the opportunity, I want to take advantage.”
The Mariners rallied in the fifth and eighth innings to take a 5-4 lead. Seattle saw its first two runs on a sacrifice fly and a solo home run by Cole Young, his 10th of the season.
Calvin Faucher unraveled in the eighth inning, and the Mariners took advantage. Cal Raleigh drove in a run on a double, and a single from Josh Naylor tied the game. Naylor later scored on a wild pitch to put Seattle ahead.
The Marlins took an early lead in the second inning on a two-run homer by Owen Caissie, his 12th of the season. Marsee drove in a run on a single in the third inning, and a sacrifice fly by Kyle Stowers in the fourth inning put the Marlins up 4-0.
Max Meyer threw five innings for the Marlins, with two runs on four hits and four strikeouts in the no-decision. Cade Gibson earned the win after a perfect 10th inning of relief.
Bryan Woo went five innings for the Mariners, with four runs (three earned) allowed on nine hits with five strikeouts in a no-decision. Michael Rucker was charged with the loss.
The two teams will meet again on Wednesday. Tyler Phillips (1-3, 3.52 ERA) will take the mound for the Marlins against the Mariners and George Kirby (7-7, 3.81 ERA).
