After a dominant Triple-A rehab stint, the Marlins’ star rookie returns to bolster a surging lineup and fortify Miami's high-stakes push for a National League wild card spot.
Miami Marlins outfielder Owen Caissie returned to the lineup in time for the weekend series finale against the New York Mets on Sunday at Citi Field.
Caissie missed 18 games while on the 10-day Injured List due to a right calf strain since July 9. The Marlins won the first game he missed but went on to lose 12 straight games.
Caissie proved he was ready to go while on a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville. He homered twice while batting .429 through seven at-bats while drawing five walks.
"He's felt great," Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said on Saturday before the transaction was made. "It was a couple things. One, certainly how did the calf hold up getting some extended exposures, both running and playing defense? And then the other part, just giving him some plate appearances. While he was able to get some of those in live settings, but to be in a game and try to get some of his timing back before he rejoined, we felt was important. So [we] kind of extended that rehab to three games to try to satisfy both of those. He checked all the boxes, and [we're] excited [for him] to get back here with us."
Caissie had knocked in a base hit in 13 of his last 17 games and was instrumental to the Marlins’ rise to second spot in the National League wild card standings. Through June 17-July 7, Caissie slashed .348/.396/.783 with 11 runs, two doubles, six home runs, 15 RBI and one stolen base.
Caissie’s presence helped the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp snap their own 12-game losing streak during their series against the Memphis Red Birds.
Caissie joins a Marlins team that has returned to their winning ways this week. The Fightin Fish swept the Philadelphia Phillies and took 2-of-3 against the Mets leading up to Sunday. Javier Sanoja and Griffin Conine homered to lead the Marlins to a 6-2 win over New York on Saturday. Conine has 10 home runs in 45 games with the Marlins so far this season.
The Marlins acquired Caissie in a trade with the Chicago Cubs for RHP Edward Cabrera. At the time, he was the Cubs’ top prospect and No. 47 overall according to MLB Pipeline. His 50 RBI are the seventh-most among MLB rookies, while he rests among the top-10 with 12 home runs.
Milbrandt’s Struggles Continue
Miami Marlins No. 4 prospect RHP Karson Milbrandt was one of the best pitchers in Double-A at the beginning of this season, but has since struggled to adapt to Triple-A.
Milbrandt struggled to make it out of the fifth inning on Saturday, allowing right-handed runs on seven hits including a career-high three home runs in 4.1 innings. The Jumbo Shrimp rallied in the eighth inning but still fell short 8-7 against Memphis.
Milbrandt earned his place in the All-Star Futures Game with a 1.34 ERA through nine starts with Double-A Pensacola. However, through the same number of appearances with Jacksonville, he has a 7.39 ERA and has yet to win an outing. He had 70 strikeouts through 47 innings with the Blue Wahoos but has more innings than strikeouts with the Jumbo Shrimp.
Milbrandt played in the Arizona Fall League last season and the Futures Game this year. That usually guarantees the path to an eventual big league call-up. However, his struggles in Triple-A suggest that maybe it would be in the Marlins' best interest to trade him for a premier player now just in case his failure to adapt is more than a flash in the pan.
