The Miami Marlins are bringing back their ace for another season, exercising Sandy Alcantara’s $21 million club option to keep the right-hander in Miami through 2027.

Sandy Alcantara isn't going anywhere.

On Friday, the Miami Marlins announced they had exercised ace Sandy Alcantara's $21 million club option for 2027.

According to Marlins beat reporter Christina De Nicola, the team would have owed Alcantara a $2 million buyout if it had decided to decline his option and move in a different direction.

The decision comes after a memorable 2026 campaign for the 31-year-old Alcantara, who continued to cement his place in franchise history.

The longest-tenured Marlin set numerous team records during the season, including innings pitched, strikeouts and quality starts.

The Marlins finished the season 80-82, missing the playoffs for the second consecutive season under manager Clayton McCullough.

His accomplishments further strengthened his legacy in Miami, where he has established himself as one of the organization's most recognizable players and a central figure in its starting rotation.

Alcantara also went 3-for-3 in save opportunities in 2026, something he had never accomplished in his professional career. The Marlins used him as a closer during the final weeks of the regular season.

Alcantara's return also provides the Marlins with some continuity heading into the 2027 season. Having an experienced starter at the top of the rotation gives Miami an important piece to build around as the organization looks to take another step forward.

For a team that has continued to develop young talent and work toward sustained success, retaining a veteran with Alcantara's experience and history with the franchise carries significance beyond the financial commitment.

The $21 million decision represents another investment in a pitcher who has played a major role in the Marlins' recent history. Rather than part ways with their longtime ace, Miami chose to keep him as part of its plans for the upcoming season.

With the club option now exercised, Alcantara and the Marlins can turn their attention toward 2027. The right-hander will have another opportunity to add to his already-impressive franchise legacy while helping Miami pursue its goals in the National League.

Miami still has other questions to address in its starting rotation heading into next season. Right-hander Max Meyer, who is recovering from a neck strain, is expected to be ready for spring training. He continues his rehabilitation in Minnesota.

Reliever Pete Fairbanks officially became a free agent Thursday and is unlikely to return to the Marlins for the 2027 season.

Miami also announced Friday that pitchers Tyler Zuber, Wikelman González and Zach Brzykcy, along with catchers Brian Navarreto and Logan Driscoll, were outrighted to Triple-A Jacksonville.
