Sandy Alcantara didn't have it going, the Miami Marlins were swept by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Sandy Alcantara struggled to dominate, third baseman Javier Sanoja homered, but the Miami Marlins lost 4-1, swept in the series by the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.
Aaron Nola (5-9) was credited with the win. In seven innings, he allowed five hits and one earned run, struck out eight batters. Alcantara (13-8) was credited with the loss. In six innings, he allowed eight hits and three earned runs, and struck out one batter. The Marlins (64-64) revert to .500 and fall further in the National League race for the last Wild Card spot. Meanwhile, the Phillies (70-58) are winners of six consecutive games.
Although not all playoff hopes are lost, it's diminishing.
Sanoja had the most consistent bat: three hits in three at-bats. The rest of the lineup combined for four hits in 31 at-bats.
Second Inning
After a scoreless opening inning, the Phillies rallied early with two outs on the board.
Left fielder Brandon Marsh and center fielder Justin Crawford singled, then catcher Garrett Stubbs drove in the game’s first run. Designated hitter Kyle Schwarber lined out to first base to close the inning.
Third Inning
The Marlins failed to respond immediately; meanwhile, the Phillies built on the early momentum.
Right fielder Bryce Harper walked, then second baseman Arraez slugged an 85.5-mile sweeper by former Marlins teammate Alcantara from the bottom of the strike zone to 376 feet deep at a 98-mile exit velocity to center field for a two-run homer.
It’s the four-time All-Star’s sixth home run of the season, his second in a Phillies uniform, giving the team a 3-0 lead.
Sixth Inning
After a couple of scoreless innings, the Marlins finally punched a run on the scoreboard.
Sanoja slugged a 90.7-mile sinker by Nola in the middle-left of the strike zone to 377 feet deep at a 104.1-mile exit velocity to left field for a solo homer. It’s the 23-year-old’s sixth home run of the season, which began to give the Marlins new life, and trailing by two runs.
Shortstop Otto Lopez and second baseman Xavier Edwards singled, but first baseman Griffin Conine and left fielder Herbierto Hernandez both struck out swinging to leave them stranded.
Seventh Inning
Stubbs singled but was tagged at second, as Schwarber grounded into a force-out. Shortstop Trea Turner doubled to center field, which caused chaos at home plate. Schwarber ran from first to score a run, but was initially ruled unsuccessful, tagged by catcher Joe Mack. The Phillies challenged; the call was overturned, and the team took a 4-1 lead.
Ninth Inning
Jhoan Duran closed the game and secured his 28th save on the season. He allowed just one hit, struck out right fielder Esteury Ruiz, and kept the Phillies in the win column.
The Marlins are off Thursday, then start a six-game homestand, evently split between the Washington Nationals and Boston Red Sox.
