Kyle Stowers returns from injury in the Miami Marlins' opening game against the Boston Red Sox.
LOANDEPOT PARK – Coming off a series sweep over the Washington Nationals, the Miami Marlins turn the page to the next chapter of the season, starting a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox.
The chase for the last Wild Card spot in the National League remains tight, but only 31 games are left on the regular-season schedule. It’s important for the Marlins to handle the business in front of them and let the rest of the dominoes play out.
Pitching Matchup
Former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara will take the mound on Monday. He’s coming off a difficult outing against the Philadelphia Phillies. In six innings, Alcantara allowed eight hits and three earned runs. In his prior four starts, he allowed 14 total hits and one earned run.
Alcantara has produced a 3.46 ERA and a 13-8 record. He still leads all major leaguers with 176.2 innings pitched, 27 starts, and 728 batters faced. Alcantara relies on seven pitches:
- Sinker (27 percent)
- Changeup (20.3 percent)
- Four Seamer (19.3 percent)
- Cutter (14.7 percent)
- Sweeper (8.4 percent)
- Slider (6.7 percent)
- Curveball (3.6 percent)
Meanwhile, the Red Sox will start two-time All-Star Ranger Suarez. He’s produced a 3.41 ERA and a 5-3 record in 113.1 innings (22 starts). Suarez relies on six pitches:

- Sinker (22.9 percent)
- Cutter (20.2 percent)
- Curveball (16.6 percent)
- Changeup (13.3 percent)
- Slider (3.9 percent)
Suarez’s curveball accounts for 37 of 113 strikeouts.
The 30-year-old has well-above-average pitching run value (91st percentile), fastball run value (94th percentile), and breaking run value (80th percentile).
Game Notes
The Marlins have officially activated Kyle Stowers from the 10-day injured list. He was sidelined for two weeks with a hamstring injury. Stowers will immediately reclaim first base and bat third in the lineup. Agustin Ramirez (batting fourth) will serve as designated hitter and Joe Mack (batting ninth), who had Sunday’s game off, returns to operate behind the plate.
One-time All-Star and left fielder Jarren Duran returns to the Red Sox’s lineup. He was benched in Sunday’s series finale against the San Francisco Giants, then pinch-hit in the eighth inning. Duran is in the midst of a career-worst season: batting .207 with a .627 OPS, including 96 hits in 464 at-bats, 13 doubles, four triples, 62 runs batted in, and 17 home runs in 122 games.
