Team Italy continues to write one of the most remarkable stories of the 2026 World Baseball Classic, and Miami Marlins prospect Jakob Marsee has been along for the ride during the country’s historic run.
Italy defeated Puerto Rico 8–6 in the quarterfinals at Daikin Park to secure a place in the first World Baseball Classic semifinal in the nation’s history. The victory capped another upset for a team that has quickly become one of the tournament’s biggest surprises.
Italy controlled much of the game early, building a sizable six-run lead that forced Puerto Rico into comeback mode. Despite Puerto Rico’s dangerous lineup, the Italian pitching staff and bullpen managed to hold off the late surge.
Puerto Rico made things interesting in the final innings, rallying to cut into the deficit and bringing the potential tying run to the plate in the ninth inning. But Italy’s bullpen held firm when it mattered most. Closer Greg Weissert delivered 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to shut the door and secure the historic victory.
For the Miami Marlins organization, the moment carries added significance.
Outfielder Jakob Marsee, one of the club’s promising young prospects, has been part of Italy’s roster throughout the tournament. The 24-year-old already delivered a key moment earlier in the competition with a clutch two-run RBI single against Mexico that helped propel Italy into the quarterfinal round.
Marsee’s presence on the roster highlights the growing influence of young MLB talent in international competition. Playing meaningful games against elite competition in front of global audiences provides valuable experience that can accelerate a player’s development.
Italy’s victory also sets up a unique moment for Marlins fans.
The semifinals will take place at loanDepot park in Miami, meaning Italy’s Cinderella run is headed directly to the Marlins’ home ballpark. The team will face the winner of the final quarterfinal matchup between Venezuela and defending champion Japan.
With momentum on its side and confidence growing, Italy has already proven it can compete with some of the tournament’s strongest teams.
Now, with a trip to the championship game on the line, Marsee and Team Italy will try to keep one of the most unexpected runs in World Baseball Classic history alive.
