Outfielder Luis Cova has the kind of skills that make him a surefire big-leaguer

For Miami Marlins' prospect Luis Cova, the future looks to be filled with a lot of home runs and stolen bases.

The 19-year-old was labeled as the 'jewel of the 2024 international class' that the team brought on board. He's considered a dual threat, with blazing speed and an emerging power bat. With his age and frame (6'1", 160 pounds), he's expected to fill out some more, which will put a little more pop in his bat as he progresses through the Miami system.,

For now, he spent the 2026 campaign at the Single-A level, with the Jupiter Hammerheads. He didn't put up huge numbers this season, but he displayed the kind of developing skills that have scouts expecting big things from the young outfielder. His ceiling is considered to be high, and Venezuelan native has the talent to be an everyday player at the game's highest level. For now, he projects as a top-of-the-order speedster, but he could fit in a more power position as he matures.

Since joining the franchise in 2024, he's put up decent hitting numbers but has been a demon on the basepaths. For his minor league career thus far, he's hit .243, with 17 home runs and 91 RBI. At the same time, however, he's racked up 105 stolen bases in just 634 at-bats.

Cova is Slowly Developing

Cova's development has also included a noticeable change in his offensive approach. He added strength to his frame and incorporated more loft into his swing, allowing him to tap into the natural power that made him such an intriguing international signing. The right-handed hitter has retained a good feel for the barrel while trading some contact for greater impact.

Perhaps most encouraging, he has shown strong swing decisions, walking nearly as often as he has struck out. How well that contact ability holds up as he advances beyond his first full-season promotion will be an important part of his development. If he polishes those factors and puts them all together, he will be an impressive weapon in MLB.

"Cova's renewed pop makes him a true 20/20 threat since he uses his plus speed well on the bases and isn't afraid to run aggressively," his MLB.com scouting report reads. "A converted infielder, he looks like a potentially plus center fielder with impressive speed underway and solid reads, and there could be untapped strength in his arm. Cova remains a toolsy prospect who has impressed with his maturity and ability to make adjustments."
