While there are bigger names in the organization, Miami youngster Dillon Lewis should draw lots of attention
Ladies and gentlemen, the envelope has been opened, the anticipation is over, and the Miami Marlins' 2027 Must-Watch Youngster Award goes to... Dillon Lewis! Please hold your applause.
The organization's 23-year-old outfielder has all the ingredients to become one of the more fascinating players in Miami's youth movement. And since joining the squad, there are several evident reasons the organization was eager to make him part of its future.
Lewis wasn't necessarily a household name when the Marlins acquired him from the New York Yankees in the Ryan Weathers trade, but his combination of power, speed, and athleticism has illustrated how correct the president of baseball operations, Peter Bendix, was when he evaluated the star's talent.
"His tools are really fantastic," Bendix said of Lewis when the Weathers deal was complete. He hits the ball incredibly hard. He's incredibly fast. He's an excellent, excellent center fielder, and he's just beginning to tap into what he could do. He has a tremendous athletic gift. There's a tremendous ceiling for Dillon."
Originally selected by the Bronx Bombers in the 13th round of the 2024 MLB Draft out of Queens College, Lewis signed for $150,000 and quickly began exceeding expectations. In his age-22 season, he hit .237/.321/.445 with 22 home runs and 26 stolen bases across Single-A and High-A.
His 2026 campaign offered another glimpse of his potential. Across 246 minor league at-bats, Lewis hit .240 with 17 home runs, 43 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases before a broken hamate bone interrupted his season.
Lewis deserves praise
And that brings us to the acceptance speech portion of tonight's festivities.
The Power Award: Lewis has legitimate thunder in his bat. His exit velocity reached 113.9 mph in 2025, demonstrating the kind of raw strength that Miami desperately needs in its developing lineup. His 20-20 potential is particularly appealing, especially for an organization looking to build an offense around young, athletic players.
The Speed and Athleticism Award: Apparently, the trophy committee couldn't overlook this category. Lewis has been caught stealing just twice in 29 professional attempts. His speed also translates defensively, where he possesses the burst to handle center field or potentially become an above-average defender in a corner.
The Potential Breakout Award: Here's where things get interesting.
Lewis isn't without flaws. Swing-and-miss concerns, particularly on pitches inside the strike zone, remain part of his scouting profile. His swing mechanics can become stiff, so he'll have to make adjustments in the batter's box to translate his power into consistent major league production.
There is also the matter of his wrist injury. After returning from more than seven weeks on the injured list, Lewis struggled to rediscover his power stroke, going 22 games without a home run. His performance in the Arizona Fall League and subsequent offseason work will be important indicators of his readiness.
What's Next For Lewis?
Lewis could begin 2027 in Triple-A, but a strong spring training and continued development could put him in position for a midseason opportunity.
The Marlins have plenty of young talent competing for recognition, but this award isn't about who has already arrived.
It's about who might be next, and that trophy is waiting. Miami's spotlight is officially on Dillon Lewis, and for good reason. So, what lies ahead for him?
Starting the 2027 season in Triple-A is a strong possibility for Lewis, yet a stellar spring performance combined with steady growth could pave the way for a midseason call-up. That's when Marlins Nation will get to see him with their very own eyes.
And when Dillon Lewis finally steps into the spotlight of The Show? Trust me, South Florida fans. You'll like him... you'll really like him.
