Brandon Compton, Miami's top minor league player in 2026, packs a wallop at the plate

As the Miami Marlins continue their progression from a poor sick cousin to a playoff contender in Major League Baseball, they have their bases covered in almost every aspect of the game.

The team is built around offensive stars who have a strong defensive mindset, like catcher Joe Mack and infielders Otto Lopez and Xavier Edwards. Along with that, the pitching rotation is anchored by a trio of great righthanders: Sandy Alcantara, Max Meyer, and Eury Perez. They have holes in the bullpen, but those can likely be patched by younger arms.

However, what this club really needs is some more power. This year, the Marlins were led in home runs by Heriberto Hernandez with 25. The Fish need more flex if they are planning on making a real run to the playoffs now. That's where Compton fits in perfectly.

A second-round selection in the 2025 MLB Draft after a standout career with the Arizona State Sun Devils, Compton is a hard-swinging left-handed hitter who delivered an impressive campaign across three minor-league levels last season. He ended up finishing the year with the Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.

By the end of the season, he posted a .270 batting average, with 36 home runs, 103 RBI, and a .987 OPS. He also stole 27 bases. Along the way, he flashed the kind of athleticism that makes him more than a traditional power prospect.

Compton Fits for the Marlins in 2027

Baseball America named Compton the Marlins 2026 Minor League Player of the Year. Now, it will be interesting to see if he can take it to the next level in just a few months. It seems he has the skills to fit the bill, according to his official MLB Scouting Report.

"The lefty slugger is a stocky 6-foot-1 with incredible raw strength out of a crouched stance. Compton was able to access that power more in his first college season when he controlled the zone better, and the Marlins will work closely on his swing decisions. There is plenty of risk in his hit tool, though, especially considering he was just 2-for-21 with nine strikeouts against 95+ mph velocity and was quite vulnerable to sliders last year in college."

Looking toward 2027, Compton has positioned himself to make the Marlins roster and be a big contributor in his rookie campaign. He proved a lot by how quickly he rose through the ranks this past year. He will have to focus on making contact and maintaining his average. That comes down to consistency, something the 22-year-old says he continues to strive for.

“The goal is being able to take good quality swings in good counts and take pitches that are not in the zone that you're looking for," Compton has said about refining his game."

Continued success against advanced pitching, improved defensive reliability and a disciplined approach at the plate will determine how quickly that opportunity arrives. If his power translates against big-league-caliber arms, Compton could become an important piece of Miami's long-term offensive future.
