Miami’s farm system surges as high-profile additions and breakout stars like Jacob Lombard propel the organization to elite status, trailing only the league's perennial powerhouses.
The Miami Marlins seem to be moving in the right direction as an organization.
According to Baseball America's August update, the Marlins added to their total of prospects in the Top 100 list. The Marlins are now tied for the third most prospects in the Top 100, trailing only the Tampa Bay Rays and the Los Angeles Dodgers, two teams who seem destined to face each other in the World Series.
Although injured, left-handed pitchers Thomas White (No. 32) and Robby Snelling (No. 42) still lead the Fish. Other top Marlins prospects include SS Aiva Arquette (No. 49), OF Cam Cannarella (No. 62), RHP Karson Milbrandt (No. 65) and SS Jacob Lombard (No. 66), who homered in his professional debut on Tuesday in Single-A Jupiter.
Cannarella started the minor league season in High-A Beloit, but rose the ranks to Triple-A Jacksonville. He enters Thursday slashing .343/.436/.558 through 66 games.
Lombard, along with Miami’s third-round draft pick Cam Kozeal, each knocked in a hit for the Hammerheads in their 2-1 win over the Palm Beach Cardinals on Wednesday. Kozeal’s first professional hit came in the sixth inning and Lombard’s crucial RBI single came in the eighth.
Lombard has had an encouraging first week so far since the Marlins took him in the first round. He introduced himself to the minor leagues with a home run during his debut on Tuesday. As that was happening, his older brother, George Lombard Jr., homered in his MLB debut for the New York Yankees.
Minor League Rundown
Triple-A Jacksonville defeated Gwinnett 6-3 in Wednesday’s rain-shortened contest. Andrew Pintar and Gage Miller each homered for the Jumbo Shrimp. Jonathon Long recorded his first hit since the Marlins acquired him at the trade deadline. Long (No. 14) was the International League Player of the Month before the Chicago Cubs traded him to Miami for Braxton Garrett.
Double-A Pensacola fell to Montgomery 9-7 despite Brandon Compton (No. 11) hitting his 27th home run of the season on Wednesday. The former Arizona State Sun Devil leads all Marlins minor leaguers in homers. Juan Matheus (No. 22) continues to lead the farm system in hits with 104.
High-A Beloit outfielder Dillon Head (No. 26) enters Thursday leading the Sky Carp with 66 hits on the season. Thursday’s starting pitcher, Nate Payne (No. 21) enters the game with the third most strikeouts among Marlins pitching prospects (114), as well as the second lowest ERA (3.77).
